Actually, weddings can be performed anywhere, but what's important is the qualifikcations of the person performing the wedding. I've seen weddings performed in back yards, in senior citizens centers, in schools, even in people's living rooms. What's important is that the person conducting the ceremony be legally recognized. All the weddings I have witnessed were conducted by clergymen of recognized religious groups. Of course, one has to get a marriage license prior to the wedding. Marv's qualifications to marry people might not be recognized by a lot of people, but they are recognized by the State. Really, in my view, it is a covenant before God, so all the ceremony does is provide societal legitimacy.

Of course, this is only what I know of American weddings. I'm sure the rules elsewhere are more stringent...

Interesting stuff by John Holt, Garius.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if the role of teachers was to answer the questions their students asked, kinda like the teachers being on the receiving end of a continuous on-going *viva voce* or practical exam, intead of the other way round.
Welcome P-C. Was it something I said that made you drop by?
Poor Bloody Marv - y'all have been pretty mean to him you know - (though it may just seem worse reading it all in one go).
Having a lovely time, visiting my PL in the sticks, where the weather is wonderous, perfect late spring. We are doing very little except loll around, talking, reading, dipping into the internet, and shooting the hell out of innocent tin cans and cardboard boxes.
I *know* I shouldn't be on-line, but if a couple of geeks get together for any serious amount of time, there is going to be an internet connection somewhere...!

Matina, I'm in serious need of coffee.
I think it's great that Marv performed the ceremony.
Have decided to go in to the library and work on reports today. I can get more accomplished when we're closed. I'll take with me and hubby and send him for take out. This will let me have tomorrow off ---which is supposed to be a beautiful, sunny day where I can work outside.

It is raining so heavily here that car drivers are pulling into the side of the road, unwilling to continue.
I'm having an annoying day. The picture I'm drawing isn't going right at all .

The cold is still trucking here. The weather, however is lovely. And it's 'free museum day', so I am particulalry irritated at being stuck inside when I could be thumbing my nose at the 20x price hike for foreigners.

Yes, Ben on re reading it does look as if we are picking on Marv unfairly, so Marv if any upset was caused. And Hypatia is right too, it was a lovely thing to do offering to perform the ceremony.
It isn't as rainy today, but the menfolk are embroiled in the Austrian Grand Prix so we won't be going out for a Sunday afternoon walk.
I used to love following the Grand Prix, until ITV got their hands on the broadcasting rights here and adverts appeared during the race. It has completely ruined it for me.

Darn, that's the second time I've posted without saying that I thought your first attempts at astrophotography are good, Lil.
I have been considering downloading the Planetarium program for my Palm as I barely know my Achilles Heel from my Orion's Belt. Has any other pda users tried it?

You remind me that I have an astronomy program somewhere in my closet, on 3.5 inch floppies. I'll have to load it up, because I was thinking last night how little I really know of the night sky.
But I was surprised at how much the earth moves in 2 or 3 minutes!

A lovely day: sunshine, reading, cooking, sleeping, talking, walking, laughing, eating, drinking.

Evening all, overtaken by a flurry of images, and wondering how Marv manages the Fishnets with those impressive piercings? Your astral phots are magic Lil, back here in a most pleasantly damp UK you have to travel a way to lose the light pollution, but I have spent some stunning nights in Norway up on the hill shivering violently with the old cassock wrapped tightly and watching stars - seen the old aurora borealis, a bit of a shock teh first time it happens, it really is quite surreal, the desert does good star too, when the winds stop blowing.

Sorry, operating on slow monk time at the moment, and another thing.....Interesting take on weddings, my personal belief is that religion is of less import than all the friends and family who witness the big event, and most important of all the person one is marrying, when you say your vows they should be vows of personal intent, not (just) an anachronistic formula dictated by someone who doesnt know you.

Hi, everyone ! Is Matina still serving coffee ?
I got really brave this weekend and decided to clean the house. I finished the kitchen (including the refrigerator) and the front room. Today I hope to tackle the stairs and basement walkways, plus the basement bathroom. It's amazing how dirty a house can get. I think we need a team of maids...
