I definitely think that the weight issue is a result of the technological revolution. With the rise of technology, the US, and other western coutries have stopped or limited manufacturing and started working with data.
As the bulk of of know, it's virtually impossible to get a workout at the keyboard, where the bulk of us live during the work day. I would also like to posit that the greater free time we are able to have due to the result of the current salaries, provides people with the time and money to enjoy a lifestyle that was only available to the rich in times past.
Most people go to restaurants on a regular basis, and the entertainment industry gets billions a year from movies.
Now what worries me is the next generation. There is a whole generation of children who go to school, go home and get on the computer or xbox or playstation. The idea of going outside and playing seems almost foreign to this generation and that will only lead to more weight problems in the future.

oh, side note i was just reminded of:
it's not so easy being thin, either. as a young teenager (like 13) i was an extremely late bloomer, and therefore was very much a toothpick. older, larger women routinely walked by me hissing, "eat something!" because they assumed i was anoerexic... *rolls eyes*
i think society focuses too much on weight and size... my personal philosophy is, as long as you're healthy and able to function in your daily life, be happy however you are.

One of my friends has the 'being thin' problem - and so does her sister...
...both of them are rather tall and very thin, and none of them eat healthily, nor exercise - I once had a discussion with the older sister, where she told me how tired she is of people telling her to eat properly, assuming she's anorectic...
...and tired of trying to gain weight, and tired of eating so called 'fattening' food - she gave up trying because nothing seemed to make any difference!

thing is, that metabolism does have an effect...some people i know eat loads and loads and dont put anything on, but spend their entire lives in front of PCs - they are really unfit - this guy gets a stitch from walking to lessons - but he has a great physique...others i know eat nothing and puit on weight at the drop of a hat

{[caer csd] standing in with even more reason as [caer tov(the original version)] is slightly squiffy.
Sea, I was skinny at 18 and had no idea I had a good figure, so promise me you will go out there and make the most of it, I never had confidence to!}

Metabolism plays a huge role in weight. Mine is finally back on track again because I'm eating a reasonable amount - not miserable enough to forget meals any more - and its remarkable the difference it makes. The problem that many people make when trying to lose weight is not eating enough. The body thinks that its starving and just stores everything...

re the weight thing. i was stick thin, and then i started to put on a little weight, and then when the other kids told me i was fat, then i kept going, because my fat became my armor. besides, it's easier to eat than to deal with life sometimes....i think a lot of overweight people are using food the way alcoholics use alcohol, or drug addicts use drugs...as a way to numb some emotional part of themselves they don't want to deal with.
that said, i have found that it is easier for me to lose weight when i am not around certain people. their stress becomes my stress, and then it's all downhill from there.
and technology makes it easier. i don't have to grow it, harvest it, grind it, can it, or preserve it in any way. i just go buy it and eat it.
