What the *Bleep* is Going On
Terran Posted Nov 2, 2005
When I first started I saw members of staff all the time generally socialising on here and keeping things cool... I haven't seen that for a long time... I've only seen Jimster.
The danger is I also remember there were people at the same time as I started complaining that they we'ren't happy with the way the site was going... whether they were right or not I don't know...
I think it was when I finally got sick of the ACE/Scout's system that I got a little concerned with the site. Then I joined the UnderGuide, which I thought would solve all our problems... and I got worried about that... sorry Jodan...
It feels like the site is being pulled apart from the inside out. I fear that it may now never strive to reach its potential. Perhaps if it became independant and others on the BBC stopped nicking stuff off it, it may be able to work. But while it is part of the BBC we and the staff are limited...
I hate to be negative, but I don't hear friendly conversations from the people in charge (and I'm not talking about the h2g2 staff as such), we don't get to speak to them. The site will survive I'm sure... probably for a long time, but as a small part of the BBC web structure... its like a bird in a cage that will never fly again...
I remember a few years ago when I regularly used to post to the BBC 606 site, there were a group of Evertonians who got sick of the morons who made it childish (and who have since taken over the place), and so one member set up a website... a smaller community, but more initmate community of Evertonians, who could be more candid without worrying about idiots coming in. Maybe we need something similar...

Hi Reef,
Disagreements do seem to be on the increase, although I haven't seen much of them personally. Partly this is, I think, because I tend to stay away from 'serious' debates when I can - I come here for fun; uni is exercising my mental muscles more than they can bear at the moment!
Having said that, there was a debate on B's personal space a couple of weeks or so back that I posted in concerning 'problem posters' - how they're created partially by the people that have a problem with them, why this happens and what to do about it.
Unbelievably that thread - which was essentially about getting those involved to think about their own reactions and rationalise why they behaved that way so that it became a process of growth and change - almost degenerated into a slanging match about events that happened months back and had been dealt with!
From observation it seemed to me that situations got increasingly out of hand when other people, not directly involved in the initial dispute (which may well have only been a misunderstanding to start off with!) waded in on both sides, muddying the waters and adding to the general tension.
I'll say here what I said there; if two researchers have a problem then it should be taken 'outside' the original thread - either to one or the other's personal space, or a neutral space - where differences of opinion / attitude could be discussed without anyone else sh*t-stirring. Everyone else should then mind their own business. It seems to me the best possible solution to avoid dragging the whole site into a series of slanging matches.
Chin up, Reef. Out of a very large membership it seems to me that it's a relatively small minority which has a tendency to behave stupidly on occasion. We're all human and capable of being bloody-minded from time to time - me included! .

I stayed away from Hootoo for a while, mainly because of time and work and so forth, but I didn't miss it much as it was, as Reefy says, Going down the pan already.
Run ins with certain Telewest user haters and the threads I enjoyed being over-run with grammatically incorrect morons looking for a date kind of cheesed me off.
But on my return I have found that some sort of civility has returned. So in the eyes of a returnee (me) things have actually got better compared to what they are.
I have no idea what all the other commotion is about as I haven't seen any negative threads yet, except those with wolfie in, but it seems to me Reefy that a break from all the aggro and a return when you're feeling fresher and more able to ignore the idiots might do you some good.
Of course, I would never encourage anyone to leave this site as I still believe it to be the best thing on the internet
Has anyone thought of bringing these feelings up to the Italics? Perhaps giving them a link to this thread may be ideal as it has no hostility and it seems to be expressing a good cross sections of peoples concerns

Back tracking a little here sorry
Reef I thought I had been the voice of reason in the WJH thread, but unfortunatly no-one wanted to listen to it,. In fact I was even compared to LW in there because I suggested people stop moaning about him, and enjoy the time he was away, while they had the chance.
Some of the actions of other researchers were completely uncalled for too, And what set my journal of yesterday off was the fact I felt that all the ACE's had suddenly become a battering board for everything that was wrong with the site.
But thanks for the vote of non confidence
