In my experience as an almost-5-years member, it seems the site has lost its centre when Douglas Adams died. I started off in h2g2.com, the independent site, and we did protest against the moderation, though it proved to be less disruptive than we thought. I did some Scouting and Sub-Editing for a bit, and found the general public to be helpful and informative. I never had to deal with ACEish problems, but as a Scout we had a strong group with opinionated people and I really enjoyed working with them.
The only higher-up, as such, members I see around these days are Mina and Jimster, and I find it a shame that the site doesn't seem to serve the Italics too. I think that if we put back the focus, i.e. emphasise again the purpose of this site as group work towards writing the guide, it'll regain momentum and be more appealing to most of us.

I agree that this site is really about contribution, and that contributing is what will make it better.
But I have to disagree on the site getting worse. I know I haven't been here for that long - in fact, I've only been here for just over a year - but it seems to me that right now the site has gotten better in the past year and we're headed on a more positive route from now than we had been.

I agree, I don't think it's getting worse. This isn't the first, nor the last time that people's behaviour's been troubling and upsetting for other researchers, but it doesn't make the site as a whole better or worse. H2G2 is what it is, and people would find the weak points of it at any time. If this is all we can pay attention to, then no wonder we get upset. I used to feel like that, with another researcher who's left in the meantime, and I can see how this has distracted from much nicer, more interesting things that were still there.

Thank you.
All I'm saying really, is I can see how Reefy gets upset but also how others (whose names I forget) don't even notice it.

Another Opinion from me on what I've seen going on around here
It also depends on what people want from the site, we all know it was primerily formed to make an edition of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy but it's not what everyone comes here for, I'd say 70% come here to meet people, play games and chat with their friends (I'm one of the 70%) so their prime interest is not going to be contributing and some are like me who had a rough time in Peer Review and thought "Bugger this, if that's their attitude they can whistle for an entry", IMHO there are 2 sides to this site and each side is not going to agree with the other, so if people want to write let them and vice versa

I'll add an opinion, which is roughly similar to yours, Reefgirl.
I think that part of the problem is that people who come here to "chat" and hang out and not write guide entries (I've about given up on that now) are looked down upon by those who use the site "properly".
I don't have much to do with ACEs (I recently rediscovered mine, only to find he's pretty much left) or scouts, and when I go to Peer Review (to review) I am often very shocked by some people's attitudes.
I sort of skated round the DW, which had the attraction of a road crash, and I pretty much sidestepped the LD thing. The LW thing is something I see now and again but to be honest, it is the reaction rather than the action that annoys me most (not always though)
Mind you... it's not all rosy at GW given what's going over there now too, Reef, are you sure you want to spend more time there?

Oh, and thanks for giving my tinted-specs back.
*whines* although they look a bit bent.
*squints*
But they seem to be working ok.

That's fair-dos Reefgirl. Each is entitled to put into the site what ever they wish, and everyone is fine with that.
However it is the edited guide that pays the bills. Without that input the site would close very quickly. This is one of the reasons why you rarely see the italics outside of Peer Review. They have to spend their time working on the Guide to justify their salaries. This is a long way from the old days when we had two italics employed solely to keep an eye on the community aspect of hootoo.

That's fair comment
I just lurk in a few threads on GW, just ones that interest me (Like the Thunks ) so I don't know what's going on either

I first discovered this site about 4 and a half years ago. When I first came on, I wrote two comprehensive guide articles about musical theater, and was told to put them in the H2G2 University. Then, a few years later, the University was closed down.
I've been a contributing researcher for a lot of group guide entries. I would still be doing that, but group guide entries were also axed. I think that it has gotten *much* harder to do guide articles if computer language doesn't come easy to you.

But there's plenty of scope for collaborative entries. I'm sort of helping out on the Sharpe ones, and there was our Stargate one (which needs updating)
Talking points have often turned up as entries later on, and everyone who is quoted get's credited too.
But I have to agree, writing an entry on your own looks harder and harder, not least because of the pasting that often gets handed out when it's in PR
