"It's already had one reply, ... "the current system works fine if it's used." And so many have pointed out that it does NOT work in these types of cases."
The system does work. The problem is that the system wasn't used correctly.
It seems that the majority of people involved were not aware that in spamming/trolling cases, (were posts in isolation do not break the houserules), you need to reply to the mods email and ask for it to be referred to the staff who can see the overall picture.

I think you're absolutely right, 2legs. The way to deal with a crisis (if that's what it is) isn't to walk away from it. If we want a better site, we have to make it ourselves. Simple as that.

It just all seems very remanisent to me of previousy 'crisi' like that with the digibox access, the DW, the fuss that some people felt on moderation when the site first went BBC-wards, and some other stuff besides, that I can't clearly remember as i just kept clear of it back when it happened TPTB are aware to my knowledge of the problems, as they are percieved, TBTB are in the hole I imainge more on the 'side' if thats the right terminology, of the 'older' researchers, but, clearly because of their position, they can't be seen to be taking sides, in favour of the oldies over the newbys as it were Hency they're taking it slowely on this matter, and certainly now, any changes to the house rules, that just happened* to mean a certain researcher was breaking that rule might be a bit odd? I also wasn't aware of teh responding to the premod Email if the issue the post had been yiksed for was a flooding/spaming/not direclty related to the content of the post having broken house rules.
I yikisied several of LWs posts, after he'd gotten rahte rnasty towards Seriph, hmm, a couple months back was it? and I wrote fairly extensively in the body of the complain, as to how each post I yikisied was breaking the house rules; saying for example; this is one is a servies of six posts, all of which are identical or near identicle and which is therefore both flooding and pamming, in addition, the contents of the post is offensive, and is being particularly directed towards one researcher' or something to that effect. all the posts I yikisied were removed and I think* remain revmoed; as I got Email from Mods saying the post had indeed broken house rules etc., and had been removed

Seems to me there's something of a Catch 22 here. For someone to be dealt with in terms of being a pain in the @rse to a large number of people, then that's exactly what they have to have been.
Ergo, people are going to have been upset and irritated to breaking point before any action can be taken, since there's no way of taking pre-emptive action against a person that *might* be a pain in the proverbial before they become one.

It seems to me that we can't blame the italics here. There are only three of them and there are so many of us. They have focused on the contribution aspect of the site recently (starting the Counties project, re-opening the University) and also in what's been going on in the rest of DNA-land (with the transfer of the messageboards and more of a global future for DNA) and so they can't pay as close attention to the non-contributing community.
That's what I've been doing, too - since the school year started I've mostly been in PR and helping with the Post, so I never even noticed LW's posts or anything else going wrong. To me this site hasn't changed at all. Despite other flame wars that I have observed, we're still the same people doing the same stuff and this place is just as magical as it was when I joined over a year ago.
How can h2g2 be going to the dogs when we're all still here to prevent it?

So the answer, in it's simplest form is to ignore the problem makers. If you ignore them, they cannot upset you, they cannot incite a reaction from you and hence they cannot get their fun/kick from you. Which I am more than happy to do and have already advised in this and one other thread as the best course of action
So come on guys, don't lose faith or get hot and bothered. Some threads may have been lost to the problems, but you can start another one and continue

Unfortunately, in this particular circumstance, leaving a thread and starting a new one hasn't helped. The problem just joins that new thread and carries on with his "ways". Still, on the whole, I have found that ignoring any inputs that aren't relevant isn't that hard. Some folks just don't seem to be able to do that. A shame, really. Meanwhile, my thread on Feedback has garnered some responses. If anyone has anything to contribute, it might help to improve this and other situations for the whole site. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/F615?thread=1360342

*comes running in*
I haven't noticed much, but then my online time has to be spread between here and GateWorld. (don't stay there exclusively, the mods are a horribly mean bunch )
I've been on h2g2 for over 5 years and things have come and gone, and to be honest most of the time they are really annoying. Sometimes I just stay away for a while, sometimes I just stay on "my" threads (the Drool thread is good for just hanging out) and sometimes I go to PR and do some proper work.
Or maybe I just have rose tinted specs and miss everything?
