The protagonists are Rayford Steele and Cameron "Buck" Williams. With names like that, the slash writes itself. The writing quality is dreck.
Deconstructed excellently by slacktivist: http://exharpazo.blogspot.com/2007/01/index-to-slactivists-left-behind.html.

Okay, let's go with that. If this is the afterlife, then why is it exactly like the pre-afterlife? Not that I care. I can still get coffee and chat with my friends on Hootoo.

Oh dear Lord, the world has ended and I have been damned.
No wait, that's just my hangover.

I liked the tweets.
A few years ago, some cable channel ran the 'Left Behind' movies. I recommend them as an alternative to grade B zombie flicks - they're about that quality, but with less gore and more smarm.
What made me mad about Tim LeHaye was that he named the villain 'Nicolai Carpathia'. As a fictional character named after a place in the Carpathians, I resent the slur.

Nicolai Carpathia was, of course, the son of a gay couple. Because *of course* the antichrist would be the product of a same-sex relationship.

Quite right, Trig - there's nothing more abhorrent to Christianity than people being conceived in unnatural ways, right?

I thought I should repost this from the News Story thread:
'"I was hoping for it because I think heaven would be a lot better than this Earth," said Mr Bauer'
That says everything about why people fell for it: rejection of life.
And this says everything about why we shouldn't go overboard laughing at them:
'"It's easy to mock them. But you can go kick puppies, too. But why?" '
Indeed. These puppies have been kicked enough for now.
And it's all going to start up again next December, but then it won't be Christians rejecting life, it will be a bunch of New Age co-opters of Aboriginal American calendrics.
The quotations are from this BBC story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-13489641

"'"I was hoping for it because I think heaven would be a lot better than this Earth," said Mr Bauer' That says everything about why people fell for it: rejection of life. [anhaga]
Well, now I'm getting a bit confused. I thought that the righteous would be spared the ill effects of the earthquakes. In any event, I would guess that the believers considered the matter out of their hands. God had decided to do this, and it would happen. Does "hoping for it" make the cataclysm any more or less likely? If yes, then someone needs a reality check. If no, then why waste the energy on something that is out of your hands?
This is an interesting time of year for anyone to decide that this Earth is a terrible place. Is Mr. Bauer colorblind, perhaps? If not, then has he noticed the thousands of bright flowers that are everywhere? Christianity does not frown on flowers ("Consider the lilies of the field," etc.), nor does it forbid people from enjoying Nature's bounty. This is a beautiful planet when it is in full bloom, or bursting with Autumn harvests.
Let's sing a hymn.
For the beauty of the Earth....

I hesitate to bring this up, but:
'As crestfallen followers of a California preacher who foresaw the world's end strained to find meaning in their lives, Harold Camping revised his apocalyptic prophecy, saying he was off by five months and the Earth actually will be obliterated on Oct. 21.'
http://www.cbc.ca/news/offbeat/story/2011/05/24/harold-camping-rapture-end-world-prediction.html
It would seem that, although 'there is no plan B', Mr. Camping has turned to plan B.
I pity the poor fools who continue to follow this shyster.

I thought the idea of the world ending on May 21st was ridiculous, but Oct 21st.....that's much more sensible. I'm convinced. After all, he can't keep on being wrong, can he?

I saw a clip of a doco to do with Ayn Rand yesterday. In an interview she said she'd been struck by something a philosopher had said which was, 'I will never the die, but world will'.
She was about as atheist as they come in a very scary way. But you kind of understand that this idea in a sort of philosophical sense..is somehow ingrained in the psyche. Yet another of the myriad ways of denial humans find to deal with knowledge of their physical death.
The End of the World?
Spaceechik, Typomancer Posted May 24, 2011
Death is inevitable, part of the "ticket to ride"...so people accept a system of belief that promises them a way out. Sometimes that belief system leads to things which help the human condition by inspiring people to use their combined resources helping others by fighting illness and poverty. And sometimes *not* -- sometimes that system of belief is very negative, degrading a person's sense of self-worth, belittling them and/or leading them to pressure others into following that belief, too. Camping is in the negative, "not" camp.
I don't WANT to die, but that's kind of included in the package deal, so I try to get over fear, and enjoy sunny days. I am an Atheist, who believes in no heaven, no hell, but that the Universe still has that special Something...which does not look like me or I like it, is not there to give me cuddles, or help me win the Lottery. Intelligence, maybe? I don't need fear of death or damnation or a promise of milk and cookies to make me be moral/ethical, and treat my fellow humans well. Pretty simple really.
Can we stop beating the dead wannabe prophet now? There's no need to be *so* offensive to believers here.

>There's no need to be *so* offensive to believers here. <
Funny thing is believers are allowed to be as offensive as they like to non-believers...and no-one bats an eyelid. h2g2 certainly didn't yikes the endless nasty remarks concerning gay people..because it was a believer saying it...or the horrible stuff about non believers being sent to spend an eternity in torment.
Presumably the people who believed this laughable twaddle thought most of us were going to hell.
