OMG - have you seen the new Google Doodle?
Cheerful Dragon Posted Aug 11, 2014
I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned today's Doodle. It's a YouTube animation celebrating this year's Perseid meteor shower.

Baron Grim Posted Aug 11, 2014
Hmmm... apparently the Perseids aren't falling over the U.S.
I also notice that they dropped the URL selection from the share feature on the doodles. Now it's only G+, FB and Twitter options.

Today's Doodle (possibly UK only) celebrates the 80th birthday of children's author Diana Wynne Jones.

Today's Doodle, again possibly UK only, celebrates the birthday of horror and mystery author Sheridan le Fanu.

The Doodle also appears on Google.ie. I'd have been surprised if it didn't. Sheridan le Fanu was born and died in Dublin, after all!

I would expect Tolstoy to be commemorated in most Western countries.
One journalist marked the anniversary by doing War and Peace in 186 words. I think it was in the Independent.

I am wondering if Canada got a unique doodle today,
inauspiciuously celebrating the 239th birthday of a
Canadian heroine - Laura Secord - whose name was
later appropriated as a brand of chocolates.

Oh hello my fellow Canadian.
I may get to meet you in late February.
Planning to escape winter and head south -
wrestle some allicrocs in Florida and then
west across Texas and Arizona to California
heading up the west coast in late February or
early March to see the tulips bloom in BC while
waiting for the snow to melt on the Prairies before
coming home cross country. Perhaps by way of Edmonton
to visit anhaga.

Art purists may object to the way they incorporate the
name Google into this facsimile of her art. It is based on
her work The Enchanted Owl which was put on a Canadian
stamp about ten years ago.

That's on the UK one. The Irish Google and the generic Google.com are both plain and doodle-less.
