Mrs Zen

Oh and Journals, too.

I need 42 pieces that show off the very best of h2g2 from over the years: from journals, from the Post, the UnderGuide and the Edited Guide, and I'm afraid I need it by this weekend... But I do need to be able to contact the writer.

Pretty please.... Folks keep on saying how special this place is and how much they want to help. This will help.

I don't have a favourite, the Improbability Drive has always been my friend. I've only picked ones that have been written by people I recognise as still active, which meant turning down lots of rather good ones. smiley - sadface I've also tried to include onel

Notable randoms from this morning:

A56598132 - Yellow Mountain
U190170 - Beatrice

A41607858 - English History - A Condensed Version for the Average Tourist
U168592 - Matt

A733600 - The Offside Rule in Football
U290 - Mina

A13663802 - Friends and Friendship
U128652 - Galaxy Babe

A4080502 - Being American
U201497 - Jordan

A36869575 - The National Memorial Arboretum
U2723325 - BMT

And now I should really be getting back to work... smiley - run

smiley - wow Thanks Vip!

Sadly a lot of my favs author has elvised. Why do they have to still be around Ben? And is it the same for pictures and photos? I can't see the point if we have to choose from people still around, especially if you want older entries too? smiley - sadface

Well we would like to be able to produce samples of great writing on h2g2 in h2g2c2 promotional materials, but of course we would need the permission of whoever wrote the entry to do that.

Remember the BBC owns the copyright to the entry jointly with the author, so the BBC can publish them anywhere, but so can the authors.

That explains it, I didn't realise you wanted to reproduce anything.

BBC doesn't share copyright with any of h2g2's entries. It has a licence to publish (or words to that effect).

From the House Rules - just wanted to clarify.

Copyright on H2G2

It's important to note that you still own the copyright to everything you contribute to H2G2. This means you are perfectly free to take what you have written and re-publish it somewhere else.

All you do in contributing to H2G2 is to grant us the right to publish. In other words, anything you create on H2G2 is done under the condition that you grant us a non-exclusive licence to distribute and edit the material in any way that we want, and in any media. (See the Terms and Conditions for the full terms of our rights.) As we may wish to distribute content on H2G2 in various formats over time, we need to be sure that we have the right to publish everything that's on the site.

Yes, the authors own it, but the BBC can use it however they like. Kinda looks the same on the surface, though.

So if we were to hypothetically produce a brochure or prospectus about h2g2 we would need the permission of authors to include their entries.

If you can think of any really good entries then we may be able to contact the author on Facebook or someone may still be in touch. smiley - smiley

I've just realised that we can't include A41607858 - English History - A Condensed Version for the Average Tourist as Matt wasn't the sole author. It was a Flea Market rescue and the original author has smiley - elvis.

Oh well, there are plenty of other good ones out there. smiley - smiley

Why not publish what you want, but with a disclaimer saying something like - "The copyright belongs to the author who we have tried and failed to contact. If said author objects to this publication, contact us and it will be removed immediately".

I think that's still classed as theft, also it doesn't work very well if the entry is published in a paper format.

There are some Entries with credentials for consideration in Ben's 42 by authors who are sadly no longer living. For example:

A1049979 Titivillus - the Typo Demon
by Bels U188050

A741647 Dancing on Tables
by lilithcookie U192100

The BBC presumably now holds sole copyright in these pieces and others like them.

We're not the Beeb. The author has copyright and the Beeb have the licence to use the material, and that's that. We have to be squeaky clean. smiley - magic

i asked this question before and the answer was roughly, the ownership rights fall to the inheritor of the estate, so you would need to find the heir to ask permission!!

"The BBC presumably now holds sole copyright in these pieces and others like them."

That's a bit sad, really. Now that the BBC's pulling the chain, it basically means their work died with them.
