rather disappointed in the Holmes site - that secret message is, erm, well, not terribly secret. Just what target audience are they hoping for here?

I liked the way that RDJ / Jude Law film used the dashing Watson of the books rather than the bumbling one of the films:

MonkeyS- all revved up with no place to go Posted Jul 27, 2010
I liked the film with RDJ and Jude Law- one of the only Jude Law films I've ever sat through. Good characterisation, only slightly let down by a weakish plot. Thought Guy Richie made a good stab at it, lots of elelments from his previous films, but the guy knows London and can spin a good yarn. Are there any plans for a sequel?
Watched the BBC production with mixed feelings, great cast, thought Martin Freeman was spot on, and Bundersnatch or whatever his name is was good too as Holmes. I liked the introduction of modern technology, but really, would Sherlock Holmes have stood by and let Watson shoot the villain, rather than seeing justice done? And then to laugh about it afterwards? And as for the 'Chuck' style flashing with the street maps!! Not sure that really sat with the whole show. Still, it'll be interesting to see how it progresses.

Am I the only one that thinks the enciphered message ought be "MBYLFIWE C UG QUNWBCHA SIO" instead of the of the one given?
The the message not ciphered ends 'xx'. You see?

IctoanAWEWawi Posted Jul 27, 2010
I think you are being a tad more clever than the target audience
After all, if figuring out ROT -6 from the 'xx' at the end was expected, they'd hardly need the prompt about Roman Emperor.
But I like the way your mind worked on that one!

"but really, would Sherlock Holmes have stood by and let Watson shoot the villain, rather than seeing justice done?"
If I recall, Holmes didn't wait for Watson to show-up and shoot the villain; instead Watson made his own way there and killed the bad guy on his own initiative. Holmes seemed quite determined to go through with the whole "mind games" thing the villain was playing.
"And then to laugh about it afterwards?"
The Holmes of the books clearly doesn't quite "connect" with other people and seems to be interested in things in a purely intellectual way. All the stuff at the end of the SH stories where Holmes suddenly breaks out moralising strike me as very Victorian/Edwardian - a way of reassuring the reader that this rather odd hero is as moral as they are. Most modern adaptations tend to play with Holmes as the slightly anti-social eccentric - Jeremy Brett was good at portraying this aspect of Holmes' character - rather than a paragon of Victoria virtue and Moffat's Holmes make this more explicit by having Holmes describe himself as a "high-functioning sociopath". It might make him more of an anti-hero to have him "enjoy" his investigations so much but it strikes me as more appropriate to the character.

I loved the 'Sherlock', incidentally. I could happily watch Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch doing the ironing and I thought an excellent job was done of convincingly moving the character 100 years forward in time whilst still keeping him "Holmes". Interestingly, I though the storyline was probably the weakest part (although still superior to a lot of British drama) with the main characters being the biggest draw.
There were some brilliant nods to the original as well, such as Holmes and Watson constantly bossing Mrs Hudson around even though she's their landlady.

Enjoyed the episode.
I think the BBC are pushing it with their linked websites for shows
i.e.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/sherlock/disclaimer.shtml
When Cameron orders the 'review' of the BBC they will jump on things like this and ask what added value does it give to a programme and a viewers 'experience'? Shouldn't they be spending money on the actual show rather than some website hardly anyone will see?
I found it via Digital Spy...haven't read it as it looks more vacuous than a twitter page.
They'll probably say it didn't cost much...but it cost something for very little evident return.

The websites really are inane. For me, they actively reduced my appreciation of the programme, which is quite a feat.

Who spotted the re-use of Dr Who sets?
The round rotunda, was from Silence in The Library and Forests of The Dead.
The pale marble room with the teapots on display, was the gallery were Rose saw the Earth destroyed, and Cassandra went pop.
I'm sure of it.
Any others I missed?

That was quite good - bit darker in the shots of the crime and so forth. And killing off museum expert lady. But yes, interesting. Shame there's only 3 of them.
Seems a bit odd there only being 3 and that they're showing them now. But I shan't complain as there's damn all else on!

kelli - ran 2 miles a day for 2012, aiming for the same for 2013 Posted Aug 2, 2010
Just bookmarking, I've only wanted to read up to the comments for the first episode which I watched yesterday. Really looking forward to the second one now That the baddie was a taxi driver was obvious so it was really stretching credibility that Holmes would only think of it so late in the day, but aside from that, loved the acting, loved the camerawork, loved the little on screen notes and general atmosphere. Could certainly recognise the writing style.

Alfster Posted Aug 2, 2010
As for Sherlock missing things like the taxi driver and the fact the girl had already worked out a couple of the numbers he did say in the first epsiode that 'he laways misses something' or some thing along those lines hence opening up the plot devices of him missing something...!

Originally, they'd planned a series of six one-hour episodes but they decided to go with a "mini-series" of three 90-minute episodes instead.
Although, if the excellent viewing figures hold-up a second series is a dead-cert.
As for the most recent episode, I thought the story and mystery element was an improvement on "A Study in Pink" but the general writing and dialogue didn't seem as good and some stuff was contrived and unnecessary (like the General thinking Watson was Holmes and how this had come about), I was also a bit unsure about the ending with the damsel in distress being threatened by a Bond-villain-type device. Didn't seem very Holmesian, even if it *was* very Sunday night drama.
Overall, though, terrific fun once again. Roll on next week!

I enjoyed the film, did anyone else think it was a bit Steam Punkish?

IctoanAWEWawi Posted Aug 2, 2010
it certainly does seem to be popular - overheard our receptionist discussing it with the site foreman doing the renovation of our office!
As for steampunk - mmmmm - overtones in atmosphere and set design to a certain extent but not really.
Key: Complain about this post
