The thing that was so good about Flash Gordon was the fact that it was so Tacky, its a classic. Let face it with line like "Flash I love you but we only have 14 hours to save the earth!" you can't help but love the whole tack behind it.
Not sure if Grease was Late 70's or early 80's just remember that it was released at the same time as Watershipdown.
I remember Adventures in Baby sitting with Elisabeth Shu, but for some unknown reason it had two titles, I think it was also released as "Night on the Town" or something as tacky!
Other Classic's - Lost Boys, Major League - one of the first apperances of Wesley "Sexy" Snipes.

Can anyone tell me what happened to the Thomson Twins, and why they where called this when none of them where twins or related?

The Thompson twins were named after a couple of Tintin characters I think. (Or at least the UK translations of the Herge books).

'Oh, and England being okay at football and crap at cricket'

No, no. England were GOOD at cricket then. They always won the Ashes, which is the only series that really counts. Who can forget Headingley 1981, or the Oval 1985? As I metioned in another forum that I can't remember now, we also gave them a good spanking in 86/87.

Sorry, that should be 'mentioned'.

Has anyone brought up the subject of Dangermouse? Best cartoon ever!

'GOOD at Cricket'? You forget the Blackwash series, surely? Getting stuffed by the Windies 5-0 and going into decline for nearly 15 years?

Granted, Beefy's efforts at Headingley in '81 and subsequently throughout the Eighties along with Gooch, Gower etc weren't bad... Hang on, why am I shooting down my own argument?

England good at cricket surley you jest?

no wait its coming back to it was true once.

Back at school the tv would be set up in the main hall to show the test matches, so that any passing student or teacher could get a quick score check. Suffice to say reasons would be found for regular walk by's.

Yay! Spandau Ballet.smiley - smiley *see 'what music are you listening to right now?'smiley - winkeye*

And the Speccy.smiley - smiley And... *gave up trying to read all those other postings* ...'Smash Hits' magazine, Top Deck cider (a canned fizzy drink containing 'real' cider mixed with lemonade), 'Remington Steele' (TV detective series starring Pierce Brosnansmiley - smiley), 'Robin of Sherwood' (another TV series starring Michael Praed), Radio 1 (except John Peelsmiley - winkeye), E.T. the extra terrestrial.....

Not-so-cool: Duran Duran (well, I was a Spandau fansmiley - winkeye), those stupid plastic 'handbags' that all the 'trendy' girls carried around (like solid plastic fishing nets), hair 'styles' (for reference see Phil Oakey in any Human League videos), 'Robin of Sherwood' (when Sean Connery took over the lead)...

Pontiac Transams, and of course, the wedding of the century - Charles and Di *and of course, that nineties sequel, the divorcesmiley - sadface*

Live Aid has to be the absolute coolest thing of the eighties though. Watched the whole thing (sixteen hours wasn't it?). There is only one thing that I associate with The Cars' song 'Drive' now.smiley - sadface

And now I've read them all, and am reeling from the shock!smiley - bigeyes

I can't believe no-one here has mentioned RED DWARF! Whoever it was that tried to write off the latter part of the eighties, it was in 1987 that the 'cult' TV series began. Also the year of 'Dirty Dancing' I believe.

1987 - a year that always sticks in my memory.smiley - smiley

Paladin of the Lost Hour

Has anyone mentioned U2? Sure, they started out in '76, but Rolling Stone proclaimed them the "band of the '80s, just after "War" was released--great album, b/t/w, but I liked "October" better--just saw a special on them on VH1, and couldn't resist. It can be argued that other bands are better, but U2 really came of age throughout the '80s.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood, U2, Communards, Bronx Beat, Alison Moya, Japan, King - who now presents programmes on VH1!

Red Dwarf, classic but for some unknown reason I thought this was in the 90's not 80's but I will agree, fantastic series and lives long in my memory.

As for Robin of Sherwood, another classic, but it was Jason Conner which took over the lead role, and although a sexy looking man, did not really fill the tights of the first.

Michael Jackson's Thriller album, and the video which I remember caused a very big stir.

Michael Praed was the first of the Robins of Sherwood and I thought he was the better one of the two. Still it did have quite a nice Clannad theme tune.

And talking of FGTH, how about something that wasn't that cool at the time, Protect and Survive, when we were all going to be blown up by the russian nuclear bombs. Still it did enable When The Wind Blows to be made, ane of the best anti nuclear war books ever.
It's amazing what cartoons can do.
