I notice that all the Cartoon Characters listed so far are animation-based. What about Cartoon characters that are book, newspaper or comic based? eg: Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts, Marmaduke, Modesty Blaze, Korky the cat, Dennis the Menace, Bash Street Kids, Judge Dredd etc.

Although I am English, one of my favourites in my youth was a cartoon character from America, based in the Okefenokee Swamps of Georgia and was a Possum called Pogo, with a variety of other characters, including Albert Alligator, Churchy-La-Femme (a turtle), Orky the Porcupine, Mamselle Hepzibah (a skunk), Howland Owl, and Beauregard Hound. Other characters were the Vulture Undertakers/Vicar (?) who spoke in Gothic text, and others who escape me. I think there were mice and suchlike.

pedro7, there were loads and loads I missed out. Just a few ideas for brevity's sake.

I read Asterix when I was small, in French, as I used to spend my summer holidays with friends near Charloi, Belgium, and they had the cartoon books. It worked well, although my french never got beyond Schoolboy. They lose a little in translation, but are nevertheless very good, and recomended reading...
