Can't you make the argument that, by excluding gay folk, the forces were excluding some excellent soldiers/technicians? Especially in the RAF/Navy where physical prowess is far less important than technical ability.
Unit discipline/cohesion doesn't seem to have suffered much in armies that allow openly-gay soldiers to serve and I'm minded of the quote from Captain Corelli's Mandolin (yes, I know it's fictional, but the sentiment was realistic): someone who's protecting someone they love is likely to be a more ferocious soldier than someone who is merely defending a comrade.
Finally, speaking from personal experience, the forces had plenty of gay folk in them before it was allowed and being forced to stay in the closet really messed some of them up. Allowing them to serve openly spares them from this needless trauma. I know that when I was living in Exeter I had a whale of a time with some of the guys from Lympstone - none of whom were gay and "proved" it by being ferociously homophobic.

This could need a whole new thyread of it's own, I must think on that further. My pesonal experiences of homosexuals serving in the Armed Forces, both nale and female, proved to be detremental to good order and discipline. Having said that, all were very good friendsiaside a completely different sexuality from my own, though seemed unable to differentiate personal and professional interests in managing servicemen/women. Perhaps it's me and how I percieve things. I open to correction/debate

Hold onto your ribs - http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2010/11/26/us-judge-says-lesbians-can-be-cured-by-male-soldiers/
"Joe Rehyansky, a part-time magistrate and Vietnam veteran, wrote on conservative news site The Daily Caller that lesbians should be allowed to serve in the military because straight male soldiers could “convert” them."
“it fell to men to swing through the trees and scour the caves in search of as many women as possible to subdue and impregnate – a tough job but someone had to do it”.

Wonderfully strong words from coalition about changing the idea of male superiority in line of Royal succession.
'..He said the Prime Minister and himself were "sympathetic" to change and that it was worth looking again at the rules which dictate that the first-born son and not a daughter inherits the throne. ..'

That's a heady brew you're stirring up Nick. Are you sure the UK is ready for that kind of radical thinking?

Unless the Labour party come out with a much clearer position that it is outrageous in this day and age for a modern, apparently civilised country to not get rid of a law that discriminates against women, in terms of who will in future become Head of State, I would be equally scathing.
Of course this subject has now come up as there might be in the not too distant future, the patter of little tiny feet emerging from the union of Bill and Kate..(well let's hope Bill's the Dad in all cases in this marriage ).
I wouldn't expect anything different from Dave..his party aren't called Conservatives for nothing. And you know what you'll get with 'em. But for Nick who likes to pride himself on his rationality and modern thinking it's yes another sign of what's to come from that little quarter in the years to come.

I do wonder if those of us, who have military service, and dispatched foes to whichever deity they happen to support could call that 'Assisted dying'?
