Hi Effers,
>'we cannot honestly regret their extermination' in terms of attitudes at the time,<
It was only a few years after Baum wrote that H G Welles wrote the War of the Worlds. I'd like to see a scene in the film where a US Army type asks help from a Native American.

From later on in the story, it looks like the victim wasn't dead yet.

No he was dead. It was the previous owner (a few years ago) who
took a week to die.
In the article it says:
"Johnny Janse van Rensburg, owner of the resort, was forced
to shoot the animals so that police could recover the victim's
remains."
So swl's comment about the stupidity of shooting the beasts to
recover the body is well taken.
But it seems the police are more focused on the victim's stupidity:
"Police spokeswoman Gerda Swart commented that, although Bredenhand
was drunk and probably not 'in sound mind', his actions were 'incredibly
dangerous and stupid'."
NO! No! No! It was the owner who was stupid.
The lions had meat to last a few days; woulda saved him a bundle.
But no, he shoots them. Stupid, stupid, stupid. The worst kind of stupid,
human arrogance about our dominion over the animals.

and, on a more profoundly practical pedagogical note:
'Advanced monitoring techniques have enabled scientists to see what happens inside your head when you listen to your mother and actually practice the violin for an hour every afternoon. And they have found that music lessons can produce profound and lasting changes that enhance the general ability to learn. These results should disabuse public officials of the idea that music classes are a mere frill, ripe for discarding in the budget crises that constantly beset public schools. . .'
