Moose vs human... I knew someone who came off worst in a similar confrontation, in Africa. (Antelope). Poor moose! (Meese?) What is the plural? smiley - reindeer

Then, there's Faggs coffee (they got into trouble for a funny advert, which was interpreted as homophobic, although it is the name of the family who founded the firm. My brother in law is related to them...)
I have a Guide Entry about NZ English, and the fragmentation of the English language.

Okay, I've almost found a moose in "The Lord of the Rings."

According to this site http://www.ultimateungulate.com/Artiodactyla/Alces_alces.html , the moose and the European elk are the same species. And this page about a "Lord of the Rings" computer game says:

"Of course, we are including many familiar real-time strategy features in the game, but we've also been working on ways to make Middle-Earth feel like a real place for the player. This involves creating environments that look and feel natural. As we look at re-creating the world of Middle-Earth, we've had to learn about the subtle events and sounds that happen in nature. One of the prototypes we've created is a very cool waterfall scenario surrounded by ambient wildlife. In this scenario, a few elk are eating grass, a few birds fly past, and some cranes are picking fish out of the water. It might sound boring, but surprisingly, many people find it to be very compelling and relaxing to watch. (People we've shown it to have actually asked for it to become a screensaver.) Beyond being great to look at and to "experience," this sort of thing helped us learn how to make a map look and feel "real" and exciting, without having to resort to explosions and tricky camera moves."

Okay, it's not really Tolkien, but they might be European Elk, which would, arguably make them the same species as Moose.

Plus, of course, there's the Flying Moose of Nargothrond.smiley - winkeye

Was Tolkien moose-ist?

Just found a quotation from 'The Fellowship of the Ring', chapter 11.

smiley - spacesmiley - spacesmiley - space'There was a lot more,' said Sam, 'all about Mordor. I didn't learn that part, it gave me the shivers. I never thought I should be going that way myself!'
smiley - spacesmiley - spacesmiley - space'Going to Mordor!' cried Pippin. 'I hope it won't come to that!'
smiley - spacesmiley - spacesmiley - space'Do not speak that name so loudly!' said Strider. 'And watch that moose!'

(That's from the rare 1977 Cobblers Press edition)

Didn't the mushroom farmer hobbit's wife make moose for desert when Frodo et al called in on their way out of the Shire? Or was that trifle?

What about this bit from chapter 4 of the second book of the Two Towers?

"'Smeagol always helps,' he said. 'He has brought moose, nice moose. Mut master has gone to sleep, and perhaps Sam wants to sleep. Doesn't want moose now? Smeagol tries to help, but he can't catch things all in a minute.'

Sam, however, had no objection to moose at all, and said so. At least, not to cooked moose. . . ."

Mut master - Lord of the Moose?

One moose to find them
One moose to bring them all

I think it would be a very worthwhile project to come up with a moose edition of The Lord of the Rings.

Trin Tragula said, er, rather... um... paraphrased:

One moose to bring them all
And in the darkness bind them

By their antlers"

I would not want THAT job, no siree...

>> 155 is too many - slow down, people! <<

It is too mnay.
It is sad and cruel and stupid.

But I picked Vermont because it is a small US state and three states south of the New Brunswick border. The numbers are unbelievably higher in the Canadian Provinces. And for each moose, on average, one human dies as well, sometimes by the carload.

Newfoundland, considered the moose center of the world did not have native moose until someone from New Brunswick dropped off just 8 of the beggars along the south shore of Newfoundland about 100 years ago in an ill-thought attempt to replace the native caribou which had been hunted to extinction along with the Beothuk indians.

"Who will remember and honour our dead? Who will remember us?"
