If you wanted to shut down H2G2 would it be a good idea to ignore and do nothing about one of its biggest problems so that people were annoyed by that person and left. Wouldn't it also be a good idea to punish people who tried to deal with the problem and allow a situation of diametric opposition between those who wanted to pointedly ignore the problem and those who were indifferent to the problem because it largely did not affect them. Thus causing such a massive problem that you closed threads and eventually the site.
Just a little paranoid daydream for you all to think about.

Enjoy the holidays Gif
Effers, delighted the visit from the family went so well - I had a similar situation with my brothers wedding a while back, worryied about how it would all go (there's a long standing, v bitter feud between my dad and his brothers, who were invited) but in the end was really, really good!
As for all the stuff that went before - I was watching from the sidelines: yikes!
Glad we're back to more amicable relations

From the past
" really must be a bit thick though in some ways, because I really don't understand your point Ictoan....."
That's fair enough, although it isn't about being thick (but you knew that already ) it's just about how you see the world.
I'm quite happy to disagree with you on this and bimble along, although I reserve the right to rehash the argument should I see that viewpoint put across again, if only in the interests of providing a different viewpoint.
It may have something to do with how I was brought up (not that I am saying that is better/worse than anyone else - just different) and no big deal was made of the 11+ for me. I went to one school, my sisters another. We all did well from our allotted places and would have done worse, I think, had they gone to an equivalent of mine and me to an equivalent of theirs. That's why I don;t see it as passing/failing. Merely recording and assigning.
Anyway, off topic it is so I shall not say anymore on the subject!

Actually given recent events here, it's a relief to read your argued post, (I won't say, well argued ), Icky.
And yes. Viva different POVs.

yeah, live in the late 80s I think.
Possibly at the NEC. Memory is a bit fuzzy.

Just for information, I'm also going on holiday for a week.
It's unlikely I'll return, as a permanent ban has been placed on my h2g2 accounts. On that basis, this is likely to be my last posting here, unless I can be bothered to jump through the minimal hoops necessary to bypass the ban. The latter is unlikely.
Therefore, so long, and thanks for all the fish.

Crikey... all this again. And I was only away for a day...
Still surely there should be some parity in the punishments? Della always seems to "get away" with her part in these things. Though SoRB should know better by now....

"Exchanging opinions is fine, attacking individuals is not. It should be possible to have a robust discussion without resorting to personal attack."
Some examples of Vicky/Della's charm - all posted within the last 24 hours - there are many, many other examples on record in this thread alone:
Post 10633 "Snipe, sneer, ponce around, throw off a tonne of insults, screech, cover ears, whinge, ponce around some more... Say the same verdammde things til hell freezes over... I can't stand the monotony of it!
Do you people ever, ever listen? Oh no, of course not! It's all "irrational" (read *terrifying* to you of the very limited minds, that can focus on only a tiny narrow part of human experience. I wonder - is it pathology? I think it probably is...)"
Post 10634 "Mr Dotty Puzzle's arrogance again! (Hey, 3D, are you an alter-ego of SorB? Your manner of expressing yourself is very similar.)"
Post 10635 "Oh, hysterically funny! Do you people anticipate jackboots and 3 am pounding on the door? How delicious for you to feel so important, and so - ooh, persecuted! Diddums!"
Post 10785 "Hey, moron. Of course I took the test, and of course I passed. Yikesing now, for your campaign of smearing me, and revealing private details...
How'd you like it if I revealed details of your convictions, hey?"
Post 10786 "Strange standards you have, you little oik. There, something for you to yikes, diddums."
Post 10794 "zoomer, you are a moron... or a very clever person who likes to pretend to be stupid in order to get at your ideological enemies.
It would be a boast if I cared, like SorB who has to bang on about his IQ at every opportunity. As it was, it was a throw-away remark, a joke, which SorB has had to, with his malodorous personal problems, turn into fodder for his sycophants, like you.
Post 10815 "You're a lying barsteward, a psychopathic drunk, and that's praising you."
Post 10823 "Oh, and SorB, sorry it's not drink is it, it's drugs, right?"

Hi
I have been thinking about all those words. I thought this morning when reading them that this time she would be suspended or something similar. But not only for the words she and Sorb were using, but also for the constance, the insistence on the same topic.
It is far beyond discussing ideas, it is something about deep mutual hate.
Im thinking that maybe a storm is easier appreciated than a steady thin rain. And problably that is the reason why Vicky has not been suspended or banned.

If people want to gas away like old spinstery gossips, discussing the bust-up, they oh so annoyingly missed, or kept their heads below the parapet at the time, it would be great if they could go somewhere else and do it. Some of us prefer to keep this thread OPEN, and discuss ideas.
Has anyone else ever read 'The Magic Mountain' by Thomas Mann? A very strange co-incidence once happened to me. I had this barium meal to check me out, beacause of a stomach problem. I saw my stomach displayed on the screen. It scared me, to see in harsh reality, all that I really was below the outer surface of my skin. That night I got to this bit in the Magic Mountain where the hero Hans Castorp, has an X-ray of his hand.
'....he gazed at this familiar part of his own body, and for the first time in his life he understood that he would die.'
I had experienced exactly the same feeling when I saw the X-ray of my stomach. I knew theoretically all about my inner organs. But the full on reality of it, came as a horrible shock......

There is nothing. Absolutely nothing that DK could do that would get her banned from this site for some reason. One of the few, if only person, who truly gives nothing of any substance in intellectual discourse to this site has once again created a situation where one of the people who does give something of substance in intellectual discourse has been permenantly banned.
Once again, I ask, what are the h2g2 editors trying to do to this site. Grind it into the ground? Make it so intellectually worthless that it gets cut in the round of budget cuts? I can inly presume that for the editors if this part of the BBC website disappeared they would not.
After all the BBC has to save money some where for all the HD TV they seem to be filming, the extra didgital channels they keep on creating.
And to ban a person for using the name of a person that an ACE has used many years ago which has been pointed out and not hidden.
Though of course now it is a weekend, and a bank holiday one at that the site moderation will only get more obtuse and slower.

What has your post to do with this specific thread, 3dots? Why are you seeking to de-rail this thread by posting this stuff here. The more you and others continue to do this, clearly with no concern or care for the this *specific* thread, the less and less sympathy I have for your whining.
Fine. But I'm a pragmatist by nature and *no* not an appeaser as you have noticed. But I know full well if this continues and leads to more boring aggro, this thread *will* get shut down. You may say, so what? We can start a new one. But I value the continuity of this thread and easily being able to refer back to parts of it that may relate to the present.
If you feel so strongly, why not start a new thread about it on your space?
As I often say to Vicky; it's your choice.
That's the last I'm going to say to you or anyone else about this issue, here.
