This is all starting to look depressingly familiar to us. We've posted in here before, so, in short:
This is a controversial subject, but we'd rather people were allowed to discuss it on h2g2.
Exchanging opinions is fine, attacking individuals is not. It should be possible to have a robust discussion without resorting to personal attack.
If this continues, we will close this thread and ban accounts that overstep the mark.

I presume continually posting passive aggressive remarks to any comment in a multitude of threads for many years that doesn't conform to one's own view with no expansion of the discussion is OK then?
Unfortunately, the root cause of all these threads going askew is never sorted out. Which is why I and others post here less and less. Anad after many years of supporting the site through good and bad times erally aren't that bothered about it anymore.
Are you?

pedro Posted May 23, 2008
Re economics:
It's about how people make decisions, ultimately, when there are different options available. Money is concerned, yeah, but that's mainly because money is how you keep the scores. Finance is a small, kinda dull, subset of economics (I studied that too), but not as dull as accountancy.
Anything exciting happened recently?

For the record, I'm sure I've seen Vicky sign off a few posts with her real first name, about a year or so ago. I remembered cos Matholwch signed with his name a few times then as well. I thought it was a trend.
Not that anyone'd ever guess *my* name.

Well Id say we've got that with an accompanying side dish of frustrated atheist and as usual its all finished off with decadent pudding of "I really dont care as long as you're both quite" from people who should but cant be bothered to know better.
Laziness is what's at the heart of all this and I too find myself guilty of that charge.
Why spend ages arguing with people who are too lazy to actually think about the evidence they are presented with. They have their little books and that's all they need to focus because the delusion of a caring God and life eternal in paradise is worth a couple of minutes prayer in anyones book. If I thought doing that would get me a reward Id do it!
The masses have an option neither religiously infussed or enthused they plod along with the loudest beat, go with the flow, cross themselveswhen they are told eat the right kind of meat and genrally try to just get on with it or openly buck the system and deal with the legal impications of refusing archaic relgious rules set into laws. Hard to say what the smarter option is but going wiht the low is certainly easier. Why fight for equal acceptance and rights for your sexual orientation when staying in the closet and getting with the programme means that they'll pay you to wear a dress and let you hang out with other guys just like you.
Atheists are lazy because we wont accept we are in a direct fight with a group of people who though not always completely alligned do always share a malevolent mindset. The religious fanatical spreaders of lies who know they are not telling the truth but spread it because the lives they like and the power they glean from the thrawl religion holds so many in relies upon it. We are lazy because we talk and dont fight. We dont act in ways that wil uundermine the religious but bounce words off their houses of worship. We should stop being the Big Bad Wolf and instead take a wrecking ball to their institutions take away the charitable status of organisations who wont treat all people in a civil way and call out the leaders of faiths for being the spreaders of lies that they are.
It is we who are deluded because we kid ourselves that they all believe when its more a case of people saying they believe because they know we wont attack a belief.
Ask yourself this, of those who you know who say they believe how many of them in their actions show that belief?
one love

Oh dear. And there was me hoping, earlier, to have taken the heat out of it. I mean...I did try to politely explain my reason for yikesing, in a blame-free way. There was a hint in there that things were headed in the wrong direction.
Hey ho!

Dogster was quite good on this a while back...although I disagree on what we mean by 'belief' and how we are able to detect or infer it.

I go away for a couple of days and I miss all the fun - I was actually going to post something along the lines of the Italics will get involved and no-one will be happy, but they beat me to it.
We've seen from Vicky an outrageous level of invective and personal abuse so I've got a solution - we all, as a group, agree to completely ignore her. For whatever reason, and I'm in no position to dispute or disagree with their choice, the Mods are choosing to let her off so it's down to us.
As a group, we choose to implement the only sanction open to us. We ignore her utterly, we don't respond to her in any way, shape or form. We only reply to her posts when she has taken the incredibly childish act of changing the subject line, and those replies change the subject line back to what we want it to be and nothing else.
We've all heard everything Vicky has got to say, and we've let her dictate the way the conversations gone so that the Mods have stepped in and, very reasonably, asked us to stop. So we stop. We stop the biggest malign influence this site has by the simple measure of ignoring her totally.
Anyone with me?

Do you ever pick at scabs, Iago? Won't happen.

>>Do you ever pick at scabs, Iago? Won't happen<<
Yeah, I do. *A lot*. And while I was writing that post , I was also aware of the fact that I've said I'll ignore her in the past, but I always come back because she's said something deliberately provocative or sensationally idiotic, so I know it's very much a case of 'Doctor, heal thyself.'
But I think she's being so offensive and destructive, we need to try. If a scab is really painful or bleeds a lot when picked, even I'll find the willpower to not pick it.
I just think we should try.

*It now appears to be down to an unholy trinity, of SoRB, Gif and zoomer...*
Awww, gee thanks people! But ... why do things like this always seem to happen when I'm asleep?
Can't accept, though. I could never put myself in the august company of Gif and I fear that if there ever was a coup I would be squished by a mere thought of the (possibly telekinetic) massive brain of SoRB.
Son, Gif, I now pronounce you King and Queen (you can sort out what goes where and when later).
As to the Vickster, I for one would be happy to *shun* her. If at any time my aged brain slips and I acknowledge her presence, I authorise anyone here (that isn't physically within 500 miles) to kick me in the pants.

Yeah lets please just get back to discussing ideas. I love this thread. The eds should be respected. And I for one won't be ignoring anyone.
Totally irrelevant I know. But I just had a brilliant time with my parents. Great discussions and no rows. Given so much conflict in life sometimes, it's just so good to value the simple ordinary things of getting on with people, and valuing being alive.
Unfortunately too much nice wine that my dad brought has addled my brain temporarily. So I'm unable to think of anything particularly intelligent or intellectual to say right now. But I'm happy, so who cares...

Ach, nice try zoomer but I've already ducked the SoRB issue.
There is one and only one claim I have to being a member of the Elite, and that is this: A711776

Sooooo ...
If morality and ethics are not exclusively the result of religion, how do those of faith justify the existence of good that does not spring from god and faith?
(thought I'd start with an easy one.)

Ah, but Gif! Son would have made such a lovely bride!
Oh well. What's the singular of The Elite, anyway?

And just so's you know, I'll be on holiday for a week.
Please try to have a definitive answer on the existence of God by the time I get back.
