Yes, people together will chat, this has a long history on h2g2, and results in many popular meets, and a vibrant on-site community.

However, h2g2 has a *purpose*. We're not just chat rooms. We're all contributing to the guide. This takes many forms: the discussion forums (actually discussing things, not idle chatter), the h2g2 post, the underguide, agg/gag, the edited guide, and the vast unedited guide of things which don't fit.

Chatting doesn't contribute information; however a discussion about going shopping for a new washing machine, and how you found that although the manufacturers said X, Y was really better. I think one principle that is fairly widely applicable is to limit the number of posts which are directed at others. So respond to comments, but don't talk to one specific person about X, instead write a journal entry (for example), and write something more general about X.

Yeah, sounds good to me. Maybe it is then both, information source and chatting because I ran several times into something I would call chat room (or private messaging) and had quickly the feeling to be redundant...
don't know whether it can be avoided or should be avoided at all unless it's not overtaking the original intent.

it just seems a little contradictive that this thread is about an anoying researcher who is repeatedly setting up new accounts, claiming to be something he is not (GA) & has had such a negative impact on people that THIS thread has been set up because of him, & no-one has thought off putting HIM on pre-mod!

Surely, he is breaking the house rules in some way!

I have seen before on this site that some-one can & has been permenantly banned from this site, & that even when they tried to set up new accounts, they were tracked down & immediatly put on pre-mod & their home-space hidden!

The trouble is, he *hasnt* actually broken the house rules.

Oh, and by the way, if Junior wants to break away from the Liam account, no matter what the situation, I feel we should give him the option. He is certainly behaving in a different manner to the rest. If it is him (and i'm not saying it is!) then he seems to have cleaned up his act. Instead of hounding him, how about we give him a chance to prove himself?

I know that if I was in his place, I would like that.

Fair enough FC... everyone's due a fair crack of the whip... let's just see how junior gets on from now on in... it wouldn't be the first time we've been mistaken - he should get the opportunity to prove us wrong (and I for one would be delighted if I were!)
