125 miles south of Calgary puts it pretty close
to the border. Might be a spillover thing or a
smuggling thing.
In Montreal there's been another multi-bullet
assassination of a mother in an expensive car
with her child left 'unharmed' in the back seat.
Drug gang revenge on the families of enemies is
the working police theory but not necessarily part
of a coincidental escalation in the 'hits' on leaders
of organised crime in Montreal.
Of course police say that when they find the bullet
ridden bodies of known crime syndicate leaders they
tend to think that the criminals are doing the dirty
work for them and in a few more weeks Montreal should
be relatively peaceful once again. Young mothers in
BMWs notwithstanding.

Some belated Edmonton food news, courtesy of the blogosphere. Sharon at http://www.onlyhereforthefood.ca in her Dec. 12th posting mentions that Battita's Calzones will be hitting the road this summer. As confirmed by their twitter page(which she provides a link to) they've purchased & wwill be fitting-out/prepping a truck - mobile calzones.Rollin', rollin', rollin' keep those calzones rollin'...sorry got carried away!
And Marianne at http://loosenyourbelt.blogspot.com (in her Dec. 11th posting)mentions that, aside from The Sugarbowl having added new beers, DaCapo is bringing in St-Viateur bagels from Montreal.

Comfort food!
Just in time for the really cold winter weather.
You don't suppose they would deliver to Boston?

I should have mentioned Battista's food van earlier. Before they went down to Calgary to pick it (a second hand Purolator van) up, he was asking me what to do if it broke down, etc. He seemed to be so worried! I told him to just phone AMA and buy a membership from the tow truck driver. When I think of the driving adventures I've had in my time (68 VW bus covered with flowers to the Mexico/U.S. border; rented VW beetle through Mexico City and down to Chiapas [a month or two before the Zapatista uprising] and back again) . . . breaking down on the QE2 in this age of cell phones seems like a Sunday drive.
Apparently they got back fine (Liv followed in her car), but they left the shop closed on the monday after the drive to recover.
Battista told me they're planning to be closed (after this week) until the tenth of January. He's been looking pretty tired lately.
I wish you could get the stuff, Paul. It really is the most amazing comfort food.

There are some excellent bagel shops near me, but first-rate calzones are to die for. For a while after I got back from Italy, I tried making my own calzones, but it's a tricky business.
I have a real craving for pizza and calzones at times. I'm fortunate in having some nearby restaurants that serve good ones.

There were *a lot* of red jerseys packed into the LRT cars today before the game.
I think I may have been the only person in town who didn't watch the game.

There was a game? Our TV has gone silly, flipping between a marathon of Third Rock From The Sun and a
marathon of Big Bang Theory.

Third Schlock from what?
I used to watch "Third Rock from the sun" every week. Then the network rescheduled ot for a night when I couldn't see it. I must say, though, that the guy who played Tommy has turned out quite nicely. He's been making some very enjoyable movies.

I only knew there was a game on the tube because I glimpsed it through the neighbours' window (haven't done television in this house in a few years now). And I figured out that there was a game in town because of all the fans heading to the Coliseum on the train and because of this thing downtown: http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/4249/telust.jpg
That banner really hits you in the eye from the other side of the river.

I don't watch television either. I don't have time. Too many books to read, web sites to explore, movies to watch at the theaters, etc.

Paul, have you ever come across these? http://www.bookdarts.com/
I just got a shipment of 2000 of the little beggers!
I can't bear to use a pencil (don't even mention a hilighter ), but I go through book darts by the gross.

What I watch these days is usually online. And not always 'television' as such, although some of it Is online video of previous telecasts.

I watch television so I can pick out the mistakes I made in a production. And for news, films and comedy.
Do any of you know about HD antennas? The cable and satellite providers aren't exactly falling all over themselves to point out the over-the-air HD channels are actually better quality (no compression) and free. Store bought antennas are cheap, but this is even cheaper.

Book darts? The books I read are library books. I would have to remove the darts before I returned the books, and I fear the darts would cause wrinkles in the pages. The librarians would wonder what kind of kinky things I was doing with the pages.

I seem to be reading children's books presently. My daughter came up with the idea of everyone in the extended family reading a book aloud to a small digital recorder ("turn the page- what a lovely picture!"). They will be transferred to a CD that will go along with the book. I'm on my fifth now, well ahead of the other grandfather (not that I'm competitive!)
I favour Munsch but I do like Sendak.

"Where the Wold Things Are" has been made into a movie. Maybe kids aren't going to even read the book when they could watch the movie instead.
