"Dreamboat Annie" by Heart caught me where it hurt... (the slow reprise version, done in a country-and-western flavour with full orchestra chiming in. And I don't even LIKE country and western, most of the time!)
"Headin' out to somewhere - won't be back for a while"
In the right frame of mind I have howled over Marillion "Misplaced Childhood" and "Clutching at Straws", but the real soul-searing catharrtic experience has to be Lou Reed's "Berlin", which for those of us in the know is like plunging into an acid bath. (I haven't resorted to "Berlin" in years, but I always feel better afterwards)
Ah,"Berlin" - a jolly little tale of mutual infidelity, drug-taking, soul-eating mutual scorn, a loveless marriage, alcoholism, meaningless sexual promiscuity, wife-beating, social services taking the children away ("because they said she was not a good mother"), suicide, and a bitter cynical little coda at the end. I bet Lou Reed was the very life and soul of parties in those days...

i don't know if i've actually cried over these songs but the ones that always get to be are
halleluia (from Shrek)
no-one but you (from the Queen musical, We Will Rock You, when they're talking about all the musician's who've died young and then one woman says 'Freddie...' and the main woman starts to sing. when i saw that a guy a few rows in front of me was literally sobbing his heart out.)
my heart will go on (titanic of course)
my immortal (evanescence, their album's actually really good.)
goodbye my lover (james blunt, heard it about a year ago before the album was even out. thought it was amazing!)
hide and seek (imogen heap)

I have sometimes welled up during the following songs, usually late at night on my own, a bit drunk, and thinking of those I love who are no longer with us.
Funnily enough its not sadness, but happy memories that cause it, and I always feel good afterwards...
Anyway, said songs are:
'One more chance', 'What is true?', 'farewell, farewell' plus others by Fairport Convention/Sandy Denny and 'turn the page' by The Streets.

That reminds me, while we're talking Springsteen.
The live version of 'The River' where he tells the story of being rejected from the army and not going to Vietnam, and how pleased his father was.

Right, now I've composed meself:
"I am the Waterboy;
The real game's not over here;
But since they took her daughters
Its her eyes that filled with water;
And I am much happier that way"
That's from Lou Reed's "The Kids", and it's the bit in the middle of side two of "Berlin" that gets me every time without fail.

Couldn't sing for crying during yesterday's Festival of 9 lessons and carols.
Partly cos of that most glorious semitone in all of music in the final lines of "Hark the Herald"
But mostly cos my son was playing the timps and I was so proud of him.
Lovely mulled wine and mince pies afterwards in the school's dining hall - all oak panels and big 10 foot fireplace complete with roraring fire and candles in candelabras on the tables...

"You're Beautiful" - Wassisname Blunt.
She smiled at me on the subway...
...I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.
It makes me think of 7/7.

Didn't I post here yesterday? I hope it's only Elton's fault, and not my head
anyway...I love Lauryn Hill Unplugged. When she cries while singing "Peace of Mind" I usually start crying too.

"Farewell, farewell to you who would hear
You lonely travellers all
The cold north wind will blow again
The winding road does call."
You're right, pie shifter, that's the one that softens you up for the rest of the album. (15 years have passed since I last played it - who knows where the time goes?)
p.s. Don't suppose you do Belgian buns, do you?

"And will you never return to see
Your bruised and beaten sons?
"Oh, I would, I would, if welcome I were
For they love me, every one"
Not 100% sure what its all about but it works well and has a good feel to it, and of course has Sandy's amazing vocals on. Another FC song in a similar vein but sung by Dave Swarbkick is 'Now be thankful'.
btw Whats a 'Belgian bun'?

Most decent UK highstreet bakers stock them, alongside such competing confections as Chelsea buns, finger buns, hot cross buns, etc. and all those gooey, creamspewing concoctions that are all too prevalent over here (in Spain)
[There is no need whatsoever for the cherry (pictured), and bakers don't usually bother with them.]
Liege & Lief was released shortly after the tragic death of drummer
Martin Lamble. I've always thought that 'Farewell Farewell' was written with him in mind.
All the best for the new year!

Now all shame has been discarded, I can admit to Eminiem's Toy soldiers (especially seeing the video clip at the same time) making my mascara run.
And I also agree on The Streets.
And don't get me onto the countless films that have made me cry.
