She Who Must Be Obeyed Posted Oct 12, 2001
Alec,
Grandma always said -You can't escape your upbringing" .
It's like the white shoes thing. Even though that rule doesn't apply in Florida .

Never before Memorial Day, or after Labor Day. One of the many useless rules my mother pounded into my head..

for me the white shoes thing extended to all major articles of clothing, unless one was wearing a white dress shirt. Weird.

A pressed white dress shirt is almost always in style.

Hey Spoo. Yep, unless you're a bride. But there is that interesting shade known as winter white for ladies clothing. My mother's explaination being white is reserved for summer only. Why? Because she said so-I do come by it honestly

It's the US flag: [**=] (stars, bars... get it?) (Took me a while, and I'm supposed to be visually attuned...)

Aren't the stars and bars usually displayed in a St. Andrews Cross?

7rob7: Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) Posted Oct 21, 2001
I don't find a St. Andrew's Cross on my keyboard - is that some new and subtle Windows' trick to dominate the world? (Mac rocks!) My Southern sensibilities were showing: I should have called them 'stripes' not 'bars'. Ready, as ever, to subvert the dominant paradigm... I suppose, though, you're wondering why I called y'all here. I've started a new thread for us to discuss alternative histories of the South at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F71235?thread=147516&post=1416880 I'd have stuck it here, but I thought it might get enough of a reaction to warrant its own li'l chunk of cyberspace. You'll recognize it by the fact that it's sitting in the front yard up on cinder blocks. Ye-haa! -7are_my_roots_showing?7
