Reason Notwithstanding

May 16th, 2001.

the news made me so sad... and again very thoughtful about our own mortality...DNA just a couple of years older than myself.

I would rush home from work in order to tape the evening broadcasts of the guide...tuned in the BBC World Service (not easy in England)to catch the series again. I was one of the 'pushers' at Ken Cambell's excellent stage production of The Hitchhikers Guide at the ICA (77-78 ?)where the scenery stayed still and the entire audience were moved on a floating/vibrating platform to face the next scene.

'Gibt es auf diesem Raumschiff Tee?' was one of the first phrases I learned to say on moving to Germany and found it to be extremely useful, not only for extracting tea from your host, but also for starting some of those great conversations you have with total strangers when you're the stranger in a strange land.

Later...the best job ever...cruising the world as the engineer of a private yacht... like space travel (but without all that tedious mucking about in hyperspace)

Now...happily married with 2 smart kids, got stuck in florida a bit longer than expected but they say you should bloom wherever you are planted.

Thanks DNA, whenever my wife tells ME i should GET SOME SENSE OF PERSPECTIVE,... ...i can only laugh.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
