And it always amuses me how you yanks can talk about things like "CT" as though they were perfectly ordinary place names - although "New York, NY" certainly looks a lot less silly than "New York, New York" (altogether now: 
...)
And what kind of a name is "Connecticut" anyway? I mean, it sounds like an instruction from some home craft kit - "To attach the slatches to the base-rods, you need to make a connecticut on the..."

I remember seeing a copy of the "Encarta Dictionary of World English" in a bookshop, in England (yes, Micros**t have started branding actual books now...). Just for a laugh, I looked up "aluminium" - it had a cross-reference to "aluminum", which had a "usage note" about the British spelling/pronounciation. So that'll be "World English", where "World"="USA + those other bits that we're supposed to try and be nice to" then...
Although I must say, it relieved me of one misconception - I always thought it was particularly ridiculous to miss out a whole syllable of the written word, but apparently they do actually write it that way...

Well, I've spent the last - ooh, hour or so? - trying to figure out why my program was behaving like it was. It turned out all I needed was to add a ".0"!

Yes, we not only spell it aluminum, we pronounce it aluminum... because that's the way it is here.

We don't feel the need to add extra syllables, apparently.

Us aussies pronounce it the British way 
and spell it the british way. One thing about the Americans I've noticed is they seem to have this thing against 's' and try to replace them with 'z' as often as they can...
