Hi, I'd like to join the Musicians' Guild
> 1.What instrument(s) do you play, or want to play? Do you sing?
Guitar, and I sing funny (& extremely rude) songs - providing they're not too difficult. I write songs, too. Mainly parodies, but some original stuff.
> 2.Do you have a favorite composer, musical artist, band, or music genre?
Rock, R&B - but mainly comedy: if I have to pick a favourite composer, it would have to be Tom Lehrer
> 3.Is there anything in particular you would like from the Musicians Guild?
Not really - companionship? I spotted the Musician's Guild when browsing through The Snockerty Friddle's work (U191777), and noticed that a) he'd got a guild logo and b) he'd stuck a link to my parody homepage (, SF) there, too. I thought - since he's obviously got taste in the one, the other might be worth having a look at
...do I need to do anything to get in?

1. I am formally trained in trumpet and can play most wind instruments . I am currently in the process of slapping together a 3 piece Funk/rock/techno band in which I vocalize and have the lion's share of the construction and arrangement.
2. I am currently very much into Dave Matthews Band, Cake, Blues Traveler, The Screaming Jets (Oz rock band), Everlast, Ben Harper,
Peter Gabriel and the list goes on and on and on etc etc........
3. I would really appreciate being able to converse with like minded, music obssessed folk. I would also love to set up a few solid friends on all continents with the aim of trading music internationally, thus expanding everyones musical horizons (and my CD collection).
So sign me up, I just lurve the rock 'n roll (Thank you very much..)

> hello phil! ever been exposed to tom lehrer?
er... did I mention he's my favourite composer? To be more specific, my favourite lyricist.
The first song I learned to play on the guitar (and the mandolin, for that matter) was The Irish Ballad (it's only Dm, G and C, so it's an easy one to start on)... I knew the words to the Elements by the time I was thirteen... I think my mother started it off by singing "I hold your hand in mine" when I was little. I've always loved comedy and comic songwriting.

The one "Too many songs by Tom Lehrer
..with not enough illustrations by Ronald Searle"?
Me, too (though it's getting a bit dog-eared) - it's where I learned the guitar accompaniments.
Happy days!

Hello!
I'm Sarah (aka Moonstalker, Saz, Hey You!, and others)
As for what i play... i seem to be working my way through most of the woodwind family, i regularly play clarinet (have done up to grade 7, then stopped doing exam stuff cos i haven't got a clue about theory despite a GCSE in music), flute, bassoon, bass clarinet, several varieties of sax and piccolo (only on rare occasions when nobody else will). Don't ask about non woodwind instruments... it was not a good experience.
My latest aquisition is a soprano saxophone which will hopefully be with me on friday! hooray. sry, am far too excited.
As for composers/genre i guess i pretty much like most kinds of music, except for really cheesy pop stuff. I have played in a couple of classical orchestras and currently play in an area youth wind ensemble (see the plea at the bottom) where we play pretty much anything... from beethoven to john williams and a lot in between!
hmm, can't remember what the last question was... oh yeah, what i'd like from the MuGs... a plea for musicians:
Any ppl of a fairly good standard willing to play in a windband concert on 9th of april in the Southampton area? i play for the Waterside Area Youth Orchestra (senior windband) and we are desperately seeking low brass, and bass instrument players to play for our easter concert. Our bassoonist is going to be in Paris and we have no trombones, tuba or anything like that! any help would be definitely appreciated!!
Ok, that's me done
~Sarah

i'd volunteer, only i'm half a world away lol. sorry. our band once had to make do without any euphoniums or piccolos... it was terrible. (especially since we were playing robert smith)
phil - yeah, that's the book. good stuff, only i wish they had 'clementine'. have you heard his recordings? that's the best one, i think... we were in stitches when he did clementine in the style of mozart.

"or one of that...crowd"
I love the G&S finale:
That he missed her depressed her
Young sister, named Esther
Dismissed her to pester she'd try
Now a pestering sister's a festering blister
You'd best-a resist her, say I
The mister resisted, the sister persisted
I kissed her all loyalty slipped
When she said I could have her, her sister's cadaver
Must surely have turned in its crypt
Surely some of the best lyric writing, ever
Heard them? I've got pretty much everything...

EncyBass-: Not going to be around much next week, cos I've got a new job... Posted Mar 10, 2003
Hello!
Always intersested in joining anything musical, cause this way I get to feel like a "proper" musician. So, onto them there questions.
1. I play bass guitar in a (currently) Stoke-based rock band called Livid. Quite, quite loud we are, too.
2. I tend to like any kind of music that is played by real people. I'm not a huge fan of programmed stuff. Got to say that my favourite artists are Metallica, Aerosmith, U2 and Our Lady Peace, in no particular order.
3. Some kind of gig guide would be a good idea, doncha think?
As for the helping out bit, I'm still finding me feet on this, so get back to me ni about a month when I know what I'm doing and I'll help out.
Cheers then
EncyBass
