That extra button! Sexy or what?

Post 1

Pheroneous II

A sartorial question this. A year or two ago, I started noticing that men, particularly those of a certain age, would wear a suit and a shirt without a tie, and then unbutton an extra button. Not just the top button, but number two as well. I mean I am all for abandoning ties but why undo buttons? In public! And then I noticed it on television. Andrew Neil was (and is) the oddest exponent. I mean, I'm sure he's a jolly nice chap and all that, but I don't want to see any more exposed flesh than is strictly necessary. And now, on the underground, the younger chap in a suit is taking it further. Three, even more buttons undone.

Please explain. What is going on?

I have my handlebar 'tache at the ready.

Strangely it's taken me since the '70s to grow some chest hair...

smiley - erm suit and shirt without a tie is acceptable .. sometimes. one or two buttons depends on the shirt really, and the place of the second button. three buttons is definitely smiley - yikesable; anyone doing that should be moderated

Just be careful we don't end up back to the string vest under a jacket. Now *that* was a fashion faux pas and no mistake smiley - yikes

Of course. You're right. I forgot about the seventies revival.

Orcus. you will find that the quantity of hair on your chest corresponds almost exactly with the quantity lost from your pate. It migrates. I'm not sure of the mechanism, but it's very possibly a scientific fact.

(Goes off in search of medallions)

Ah, I don't suffer from such hair loss. smiley - biggrin

I do think that chest hair increases proportionally with that from the nose and ears though.
I'm with Billy Connolly on trying to imagine a primeval use for foot long nasal hair.

Oh dear.

I usually leave the top two undone (unless I HAVE to wear a tie when I try to get away without doing up the top one). Always have. It's just more comfortable. I never wear round necked t-shirts either, always "grandad" style.

50. A little overweight. Thinning. Beardy. Slightly hairy.

No medallion.

Plenty of etchings though. smiley - laugh

I'm pretty sure it's been around for more than a couple of years. On a number of occasions when I have been out, girls have undone the second button for me, so I assume they like it?

No medallion or chest hair though smiley - tongueout.

Seems to me Mr B you must have a secret that you need to share... Do you splash it on all over? Are they investigating a baby-oiled six pack? Do tell!

Dea.. - call me Mrs B!

smiley - laugh As a girl I can safely say that the reason they undo your second button is so that your collar sits better! Shirts designed to be worn with a tie look silly with just the top button undone as the collar is not loose enough to sit nicely.

Thats hardly fair, Miss D, to dash our hopes like that. Here we are thinking all sorts of salacious thoughts... and you come along and say its just to make us look pretty! (Or prettier in Orcus' case)

Maybe it's a 70s revival and maybe it's a new fashion trend.
It seems to have started with Indians, Pakistanis and other
Asian types who found upon adopting Western style suitjackets
their traditional shirts didn't look quite right under them.

First time I saw it was on the Iranian President,
Lookma I'ma Dinnerjacket.

I'm going to be brave and try it for a day, will report back. Especially if maidens swoon.

Hi ~ jwf ~. Of course it's not me. How could it be? If it were, I might enquire as to your health, wealth and otherwise (Was in not in an old volvo on the terrace, with mice??) but as it's not me, I won't.
