A Conversation for Ask h2g2

The H2G2 Editors

Hello all,

Can any of you think of any examples of conversation threads on h2g2 that you think stand as a good example of a subject being explored with real enthusiasm and passion?

We're not looking for things about politics or religion, as we can think of lots of these (!), or anything too 'quirky'. Really, we're looking for the sort of conversation that an outsider wouldn't necessarily expect to find on h2g2. It can be anywhere: at the bottom of an Entry, on a PS, or on good old Ask h2g2 of course.

If you could add any such links to this thread then that would be fantastic. smiley - ok

Thanks!

I don't suppose this one fits your brief... But it's certainly classic - as are all the conversations hanging off that particular entry...

How about the threads that eventually became the 'Guitar-related Injuries' (F53961?thread=268734) and 'Guitar Heroes' (F1964168?thread=543854) Entries?

This researcher came to look for experiences of giving up smoking: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/F103378?thread=5082794 I don't know which threads they found, but a brief search gave these results: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/Search?searchstring=smoking I know there are various threads on 'Ask' somewhere as well as journals, but it would take ages to find them.

There's the First kiss, last kiss, best kiss, worst kiss...? thread which eventually became a good entry. F19585?thread=269238

There was a good one about the speed of a hot drink cooling depending on when the milk was put in. It led to several researchers whipping out their kettles and thermometers and doing experiments to find out whether it stays hot longer if you put the milk in as soon as you put the hot water in, or if you leave it a while and then put the cold milk in.

I think the results were written up for smiley - thepost.

There was a brief, but sweet, discussion of whose starships were better, Star Trek's or Star Wars' which lead to SoRB and Kerr Avon having a geek-off. I'd call that a classic.

>...Star Trek's or Star Wars'...

Is that really "the sort of conversation that an outsider wouldn't necessarily expect to find on h2g2"? smiley - winkeye

If we're permitting geekiness, then the 'Best Bits of Monty Python' thread (F83550?thread=164894) might meet the other criteria.

There was a really good convo, I think here on Ask, about hearing aids for some kid who had a rare form of deafness, in which 2Legs and others gave some pretty damn fine advice, and which I though exemplified the spirit of h2g2, but I can't even remember which year it was in 2007, 2006, maybe 2005 smiley - erm, so although I tried scanning Ask for about 20 minutes, I couldn't find it.

It's nice to see, sometimes, passionate conversation based on Edited Guide Entries. That is, after all, how this place is intended to work.

F3534501?thread=2500896 - Wrong case to make the point, based on the entry The Case of Bently and Craig.

It is political, perhaps, but it's not tied into current affairs. And a discussion of the death penalty is always ... interesting?
