If you think that's wait until you hear the noise caused by a ferret cracking open a snail shell prior to unraveling it on a patio slab! Now imagine sweeping up the remaining bits of inside-out snail. Still, it keeps my plants from being munched by slugs and snails! As a form of organic pest control ferrets are really good!
It's a good page Researcher 170995! That's not a froody name by the way - unless you're in disguise?

I don't know why my name has defaulted, possibly because of the tag I put on: "Guns don't kill people rappers do, I'm a f***ing rapper and I might kill you!"
I'll change it to something less comically controversial and see what happens.

I am horrified. What have slugs ever done to deserve this kind of malicious bad press? Don't you *know* that slugs are beautiful? Sheesh. Let me point out some of their more interesting aspects, since you clearly haven't taken the time, in between STEPPING ON THEM ALL to take a proper look at them.
1. They're not *all* pale; they come in a whole palette of different colours, actually: russet, orange, yellow, green, blue, dove grey, chocolate brown, ebony, cream, beige, and probably others I can't immediately think of. They come with a variety of patternings, too: spots and stripes, mottles and patches.
2. They have a smooth and sinuous way of moving. They are graceful. They are silent. Incredibly, they can glide over broken glass without getting cut.
3. They can bungee jump, making them probably the most exciting lovemakers in the animal world. That's right--a pair of slugs will climb a tree, crawl out along a branch, then make bungee rope out of their incredibly versatile slime, and they'll mate in mid-air, swinging on the end of this rope. I suppose when you're a creature that gets splatted wherever you go, the dangers of falling from a great height don't seem so great.
So stick *that* in your pipes an' smoke it!

"I agree with snailrind, the only snail is a splatted one, something you have done to it.
They can be noisy however, that was the topic of the thread, remember? Not only their defense can be heard, also some snails have a noisy eating habit. "

I don't go out of my way to kill slugs and snails, in fact pre-ferrets I'd pick them up on a leaf and lob them into next door's garden!
Now that I've got the ferrets though I go for kindness to ferrets in exchange for cruelty to slugs and snails! It keeps the ferrets amused and means I don't have to feed them as much!
Plus I don't have to use nasty chemicals to stop my plants getting muched so it's better for the environment.
PS: ferrets are cool!

I bet your neighbours loved you!
Ferrets are a bit like slugs in some ways. Long and sinuous. Range of colours. Omnivorous.

When my giant African landsnails slide down glass, they chug like something's gone badly wrong with the plumbing.

Giant african landsnails, that sounds scary.
There was a big uproar in Denmark a few years back about what was called Killer Slugs. Basically just a species of snails that eats a lot, and don´t seem to care too much about poisons. But judging from the reactions, you´d think it was some kind of man eating beast.

terrible joke Venus!
Just to clarify - the only thing keeping my neighbour's garden from taking over the world is the extra slugs and snails that I chuck in there.
I might have a problem now that the ferrets are eating all the slugs and snails. i'll have to get a flame thrower to keep the weeds at bay...
