How much junk is on your desk right now?
Garentee - Ruler of Uterly Hopeless Romantics Started conversation Jul 2, 2002
Just wondering how much junk people can accumulate on their desks. It only seems to take about an hour to clutter my desk after 2 hours of carefully sorting everything.
At the moment I have:
A big bunch of cd's in various piles
bits of carboard that used to keep the cd's in order
pc
telephone
cell (mobile phone)
a mug (which still has the gooey stuff at the bottom)
a dirty plate
a notebook (or secondary source of bits of paper)
pen + pencil
various bits of paper.
more bits of cable than are actually plugged in anywhere.
All that besides the boxes, bag, cabling and cd's spread out around my feet.

my daughter's class photgraph
a calculator
a floppy disk that won't work - I've called the helpdesk....
a calculator
sellotape
my cellphone (Harry Potter cover)
land line
stapler
handcream
paperweight
paperclip holder with one paperclip in it
desk tidy (HA!)
bits of paper on how to write in Guide ML
magnetic poetry words
more files that have something to do with why I get paid to be here at all
3 mousemats on top of each other (plain blue, a recruitment consultancy freebie and the Lion King)
a diary
yet more piles of work related paper.

Woha, ok. You asked for it...
From left to right: A pile of various folders and papers and stuff, on top of which sits The Discworld Companion. Another pile of same, including a calendar and my diary and a notepad on which is probably written a list of Things To Do that I haven't looked at for days, a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, an ashtray with a burning cigarette in it, a half empty coffee cup, a nail file and a nail clipper, a floppy disc on top of a bank statement and another letter of sorts, a pen, a jar of instant coffee, a bottle of cleaning fluid of sorts, the computer screen and speakers + keyboard and mousepad, a £2 coin, a floppy drive, a telephone, two trays full of various documents, a draft for a document I'm in the process of revising, a sick note from one of the employees, my keyring, two wooden cups full of pens and a wooden box thingy full of odds and ends, then comes an array of stapler, cellotape, glue etc. + a bulletin board on top of a shelf wich is resting on the desktop, three new piles of paper, folders, magazines etc. under which lie a ruler, and then three slightly different piles, one with mostly envelopes and some other stuff, one with recently used exam questions and one with old info material and a three unused notepads. And finally a piece of fluff.
And that's just my desk. The rest of my office is done in the same style.
I'm so glad I'm off for my holidays on Saturday.

Which one? I've had to extend myself across two desks.
Desk one:
Computer, Scanner, Printer, etc...
Stack of CDs
Piles of printer paper, used and unused.
Old software boxes, many multiple versions of the same SW(?)
A second, unused printer.
Gads and gads of gargoyles.
A mini pool table.
Two decks of tarot cards.
A plastic Pikachu.
A foam rubber brain.
A stapler.
About 20 unopened decks of playing cards.
An unwrapped "beer" t-shirt, pressure packed in the shape of a beer bottle.
Two ZIP disks.
Desk two:
Paint, paint brushes, many small "goblins"
A desk tidy.
Three jars full of pens.
White erase solvent, for which I have no whiteboard.
Two bottles of clear coat expoxy (must be mixed).
A see-through telephone.
A clock.
A small water garden with a water bulb you squeeze to get a fountain.
A mini fondue pot.
Candles.
A bottle of tacks.
A manual desk calendar reading Tuesday, June 19. Note...may or may not be a real date from last year. Certainly not this year.
Picture of my wife.
A small blue plastic monkey from a cocktail.
That's about it...

working on the principle that a tidy desk is indicative of a tidy mind and that efficient employees should always have time to organise their desks I reckon we're all about due to get fired around here

But Whisky, a barren, conformist landscape does not nurture creativity.
P.S....you can't appreciate how pleased I am to see that Whisky is spelled properly.

HP phone covers widely available. I bought a set in Carphone Warehouse last year for a friend, this set I bought in an average cellphone shop.
I like Greydesk's desk best. Want to swap?
A Hoegarden glass?????
Oh, nearly forgot. I tried a different floppy, and it worked, so you can stop worrying about me, thanks.

Ah...a connoisseur.
Don't mind the blatant self-publicity. No one else will do it for you, unless you're paying them.
I haven't written anything worth crowing about yet (been on h2g2 less than 24 hours), but you can poke at my personal space if you want to.

More on topic...my desk at work is far more neat than my desk at home, however I rarely glance away from my computer screen anyway. Anybody else find that staring at a tube buggers your night vision?

luckystar, i guessed that you must be in europe so i stopped by your u space i wonder if those phone covers are available online? i haven't seen them over here (in u.s.). of course, i don't have the same kind of phone everyone else does, my luck being that even if i did manage to find one they wouldn't make one for my phone.
thanks!
oh, and i've tidied up now

what phone do you have?
I can't see why anyone would want anything other than a Nokia 3310. They do everything I need, and more, have composer (shameless plug for h2g2 ringtone) and shops are practically giving them away (1 euro for my last one)
