I haven't seen the Harry Potter film, and I have no intention of going to see it. Why not? It's been hyped too much, and I've often found that films that get hyped end up disappointing. Plus we live in an area where there's a Warner Bros. shop, so we're constantly seeing Harry Potter merchandise. OK, so I've seen a number of reviews saying the film's good / great / whatever. They said that about E.T., and I didn't think *that* was anything special when I finally got to see it. I may watch it when it finally comes on TV (probably next Christmas!), but I'm not going out of my way to see it.

I'm a devoted reader of the books, but with all the beautiful images in my mind I don't want to destroy it by seeing someone else's [ridiculous, of course] interpretation of it. Most of the toys and such look pretty bad, though I have seen some really nice t-shirts. Now I need a really huge fan of it to give me a rundown...

Not a really huge fan, but I am going to see the movie. I don't expect it too be brilliant and earth shaking, but then I didin;t find the books the best thing ever either.
I would like to see the 'Chronicles of Prydain' by Llyod Alexander(which I cant spell) made into a sensible film or five. In between LOTR and Narnia it would fit the current film climate well and probably wouldnt be all that expensive. As a bonus it's based quite heavily on Welsh legends so there is lots of extra source material available.
Also on my wish list is 'the Dark is Rising Sequence' by Susan Cooper. I love the second and fourth books particularly.
All of which you soooo didn't want to know

Zantic - Who is this woman?? Posted Nov 19, 2001
I love the Harry Potter books. Of this I am not ashamed...and I haven't gone in for the "adult" covers either.
"I'm reading a kids book on the bus....you gotta problem wi' tha' pal?? ."
I am also going to see the fillum. I am not expecting it (or the books) to be earthshatteringly insightful. It is all intended for kids...not for adults so it doesn't HAVE to be. But at least it doesn't have the moral being stuffed down your throat from page one..
Or to capture my image of the characters/situation/etc etc etc. What I am expecting is a couple of hours of and CGI/SFX. Same for LORT 1/2/3.
You is only greatly dissapointed if you have great expectations, as a cynical b*rd once wrote.
C'mon.....don't take it so seriously. And so what if it's hyped beyond the moon and starts. That's what hollywood does. And it's got kids (esp. boys) reading...!!!!!! Anything that does that HAS to get some respect folks..
Of course the toys and stuff is cr*p.....it ain't meant for collections, but for kids to play with...
Cheezy freeks peeps, what is it with the inability to even consider joining in and having a larf just cos something seems faddy? Or is it an "I am an individual" thing?
Hopefully I have not offended anyone. But this sounds like the sort of stuff i used to say....before I realised that doing stuff for the fun of it and not giving three hoots and an Albus Dumbledore for what others thought of me (and I'm having a heck of a lot more fun these days).
Say after me......

Well, said Zantic!!!
My thoughts exactly.
The movie will be FUN regardless if it doesn't match up to anyones individual expectations and private mental images of what Hogwarts etc looks like.
C'mon guys, just lighten up a bit.

Have you noticed how all the bookstores have promotional campaigns building up to the release of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Can you wait for the big day? Well, to let you all in on a secret, the books have been out for a while already!
Don't get me wrong, if the bookstores can use the films to promote reading, good on them.

I've seen the film, having read about 1/2 the 1st book and heard it last x-mas on the BBC with Stephen Fry.
I didn't come with high hopes, but I certainly wasn't disappointed. The SFX set pieces were great, the one-linerswere usually delivered with aplomb, the plot was carried through with the right amount of pace and it was an enjoyable innocent juvenile lark throughout. The acting was not what it might have been, and alot of the subtleties in the book were removed but, hey, that's the difference between a book and a film. You just can't fit every word in and it was lengthy for a film as it was. That is not a criticism: I came out, looked at my watch and was VERY surprised.
Don't expect me to buy a doll, though.

I haven't read the books, and don't really have that much interest in doing so, but I went to see the movie anyway (in part, hoping for a glimpse at a Star Wars trailer which never appeared). I didn't expect much, so I wasn't disappointed. I wasn't exactly blown away, either, but you could do worse.
Rocky Horror style, anyone? livens it up a bit anyway.
Phryne- 'Best Suppurating Actress' Posted Nov 20, 2001
Well, I thought it was spiffing. I am careful with my money (for which read 'stingy') and have seen it 3 times now, due to having to go with different friends family etc.
We had audience participation in the last showing... if ever I see it again, I will have to do the following:
When Sorting Hat (Lesley Philips) is on, replace random words with 'Panties'. "I'll put you in panties, you'd be great there" etc;
Shout 'Wahehehey!' loudly when Hermione does that killed/expelled line;
Release a helium balloon after she does the levitation charm;
In flying keys scene, scream 'They're in my hair! They're in my hair!' and flap.
Who cares if it isn't exactly like the book? It isn't meant to be. Appreciate for what it is- the writer likes it doesn't she? There. What do we know.

I have read three of the books and really enjoyed the film. Hubby hasn't read the books and said it was overhyped. I was aware of him starting to get bored after the first couple of hours.
Looking forward to seeing LotR, trailer looked really impressive.
Will also see SW, but feel that the first two original films have never been matched.

It seems that a whole load of people agree with you. They were voted joint Greatest Film Ever on the Channel 4 list. Where were Grease, and Mary Poppins, and the Magnificent Seven, though?!
