ok 168 hours then mr.maths!
thanks for all your advice it has helped my associate and i to devise some quite detailed and strict rules, along with the imperical studies and theories we have researched. surprisingly there is more relevant information in this conversation than there is in the studies!
would you like us to give an on-line account of the stunt?
if so, it is starting tomorrow (19 november 2001) at 8:00am. and we will be writing in this forum each evening/night(GMT).

And I'll be timing you because I wouldn't want you getting in trouble with the Guinness World Record people.
Now you're sure you understand that one full day has 24 hours and seven of those equals one week.
Look forward to seeing your postings. Good luck!
peace

Direct electrical stimulation of the adrenal gland should do it, but don't over do it on the voltage front.
Seriously, everyone even thinking about doing this should have a full check-up before they start and the whole experiment should be monitored 24-7 by people not taking part. You'll need to keep a regular check on pulse rate, temperature and blood pressure. After long periods without sleep your hormone levels will be all over the place. You'll feel very disorientated and stressed. You will begin to behave irationally and unpredictably. You may be a danger to yourself and others.
Oh, and keeping the room temperature a couple of degrees below normal will help.

well this is the first account of the first 24 hours. at the moment all the effects so far are slight fatigue and matt has a headache (also he is in cold sweat) he seems to be suffering worst at present but im sure i'll catch up soon. no halusinations yet. we have unfortunatly had to delve into our diminishing supply of red bull. having drunk 3 cans (matt 4). we also feel slightly ill we think this is due to the effects of red bull and i think my liver hurts? to eat we have had a bag of kettle chips (chilli flavour), and i alone have had halk a quish(spelling not sure) and 2 cheese triangles. i think our eating and drinknig habits are going to have to change dramatically if we are to hold out for the rest of the week, knowing what we now know. chess has helped us through the night having played 5 games (5 nil to matt!) this is no doudt good stimulation for the mind and rest for the body. also matt has been playing golf.
any suggestions and comments as always are welcome (positive and negative). and some company!

I would suggest staying in bright light as much as possible. It may help keep you from feeling sleepy. And I think you're supposed to avoid dairy products... Something about tryptophan?

Do you have someone who's not participating in this experiment watching you?? You will probably experience the same sorts of side affects as if you were drunk or on drugs, so someone making sure you're not being dangerous, not hurting yourselves etc would probably be a good idea...

drink lots of water, it will help flush the red bull out of your system and if you have to go the loo every half hour you wont feel nearly as sleepy!
good luck

I can't believe you resorted to red bull in the first day. there's no hope of you lasting even 3 days with that attitude

I can't believe you resorted to red bull without the vodka
And talking of sleep deprivation, for some reason I could not sleep at all last night and have now gone 40 hours without sleep. In which time I've done a full and productive day at work. True I'm not going to go for the whole week, in fact I'm not planning on going much more than 41 hours. See you tomorrow

Red bull= bad idea at any time it tastes like dingle water...
Plenty of actual water is good idea: as for diet, i imagine a high carbohydrate diet will be good, plenty of pasta... less fat, as lipids slow down GI tract, and the hormones released as a consequence not only slow down gut, but rest of system also...
Doesn't red bull, fall into catogry of artifical stimulents? its cafeine rich if i remember corectly and most effective with vodka as someone has mentioned... don't think thats the aim though...
Night time must be hardest.. i guess trying to do daytime things would help switch the mind.. maybe... Therefore i would imagine, with no evidence whatsoever so its probably clap trap, that "resting" in the evening is a bad idea.. try that at different times each day, to constantly move your body clock upwards and onwoards?
I['m really talking bladder fish peanuts now, too much alcohol??? good luck, and a independant observer to catogrise whats happening, as well as hold you up if there are any dangerous effects is prob a good idea...

OH no! I'm too late to tell them that they should make sure they get plenty of sleep for the week beforehand....
Aren't there already plenty of studies of sleep deprivation? Ask junior doctors or parents of tiny babies (especially multiple births)
