The time has come for me to get my hair cut again, but I have a dilemna. Ideally I would like it as short as possible to reduce maintenance, but at the same time a #1 makes me look a bit like a thug. What thoughts?

The only person whose opinion you have to take into account is herself (You already know my opinion , but I don't think people have to take notice of their mothers when they're nearly 30)

Get rid of it all then! (Though I've been told it's hard work to keep a head truly shaven)

I go for a #4 - it's long enough not to make me look like a thug, but short enough not to need much attention - no need to brush, dries in minutes after washing/rain.

A friend went down the 'shave it all off' route, but he says if you don't keep it regularly shaved it turns into velcro and you can't get your t-shirt over your head - so that fails the low-maintenance test.

I'm a #6 but working up slowly to a #4. Progress from #8 to #6 however was swift.

You could go for the #1 but dye it pink in order to soften the look.

Why cut it at all?

Seriously, if you have to, a number 4 is about right, it depends on what shape your head is & if you've got any scars.

Well, the former Mr Ben go a number 7 once, and looked like a walking potato.

If you want low maintenance, then don't cut it too short. The shorter it is, the faster it will appear to grow, so a number 1 will change to a number 2 very quickly. Unfortunately, it doesn't all grow at the same rate so that you will need to get it done again in about 2 weeks. Try a number 3, as you can get by for about 6 weeks with no hair maintenance other than the following:

In the end I got a short back and sides. All very ordinary, but at least it is done now.

I just got a number 1 today. That is, I gave myself a number 3, asked Mrs Kebab to tidy up the fuzz on my neck, and she saw a tuft that I'd missed. And took it off. Only there was no comb on the trimmer. So I had to take the whole lot off to make it even.

I look like a thug. And a potato. I hope it grows quickly.

It does. I had a #1 just before the nodnol meet, I now have perfectly layered hair about 2 inches long

I'm glad this conversation has returned...
I'm 7 weeks away from getting married and I need my hair cutting again...and this time it is more serious because the chosen haircut will be on my wedding photos forever.
My current hair is 4" long all over and a mess - what are my options?

To go with the beard.

Take herself (because they're her wedding pics too) with you to an (expensive) hairdresser NOW. If he cuts it too short - which he will - it gives you a couple of weeks to grow out of the plucked chicken look.
Make an appointment on the morning of the wedding for a shave and a hair trim. Take your BM to this. This is an order

I personally go for a number 2 on the sides and back and a number 3 on top and get it done once a month.

Fortunately it costs me nothing as my partner does it for me.

But it is all a matter of personal taste and is also dictated by how fair & or grey your hair is - simple rule of thumb the the fairer or greyer you are the higher the comb number should be on the clippers.

Why? because if you are going grey and have say a number 2, you end up looking like you have bald spots.
