Venerable Researchers: Santragenius V

A chatty budgerigar with a book called 'How to Speak to Humans'.

Venerable Researchers

I've known this interviewee for... I don't remember how long! At least a decade, though.

Please welcome Santragenius V!

When did you join h2g2?

9.9.99 smiley - smiley

How did you hear of/find h2g2?

An insert in the Starship Titanic game, I believe. Given the onslaught of people joining at that time, I'm likely by far not the only one to have seen that.

Why did you join h2g2?

As a huge fan of HHGTTG (you might say that the slightly expended trilogy is something of a bible, no offense to the real one, in the household), signing up as a researcher for the Earth Edition just seemed like a "Oooooh, very exciting" and absolutely-must-do kind of thing.

Did you jump right in, or did you lurk awhile first?

Honestly, I don't remember exactly. I do remember the pleasure of being ACEd and greeted by Anonymouse shortly after making version 0.1 of My Space, though.

Have you written an Edited Entry?

Yes.

How many?

2, I believe. Have had a few more as ideas in the drawer for years smiley - erm

What was your first Entry?

Danish Rye Bread

What is your favorite Entry (of the ones you've written)?

Gammel Dansk, the Essence of Denmark. If nothing else, because I think I was terribly clever with the title smiley - winkeye

What is your favorite Entry by someone else?

A short and un-edited, yet very scientifically precise entry on the optimal way of making a gin and tonic. But I read way too few of the entries *hangs head*

Do you belong to/have you started any clubs/societies/what-have-you on h2g2?

Oh yeah, both. By far most of my H2G2 time is spent in Lil's Atelier aka The Salon. Most brilliant and intelligent hang-out crowd on this planet. But also spent time as a muse, in the Church of the True Brownie, as ambassador of Danevang and Count of Rabbitforest at the Royal Court of Damogram - and a few others.

My own creation is the H2G2 Great Outdoors Resort (once a scout... smiley - winkeye) About the only thing active there is the Bar (of course) but that is past post 36,000). And I have just realised that I have had that thread unsubbed by some scary mistake smiley - yikes. The resort is within easy walking distance from Hati's Summerhouse, coincidentally.

Is that/are those club(s)/society(ies)/what-have-you(s) still active?

The Salon.

Have you held any volunteer positions in the past?

Yes, as an ACE. Remembering the warm fuzzy feeling of being met by someone when I signed up, I spent some time as part of that team - but eventually resigned as I ran out of RL time to do it properly (as by my own measure).

Are you a current volunteer?

Errm, no. I actually signed up for the Comm team of the new entity just when the bid to take over from the Beeb came through - but like with the ACEing, w**k took over, only more brutally smiley - sadface

Which elvised researcher do you miss most?

Ben and Ag, in the periods of time when they've been away. Of the more permanent ones, Montana Redhead (though I do keep in touch with all of them on FB).

Me too.

Have you been an elvised researcher?

No.

Have you been known by other names on h2g2 (not necessarily other accounts)?

Well, there is a certain ghost in the cellars under the Resort bar...

Is there anything from h2g2's past that you miss?

Maybe the stubbornness, silliness and oddness of the Scandinavian thread where we insisted on communicating in our various Scandinavian languages (duly translated in [ ] following each post as we didn't want to exclude anyone), after the Beeb put in place moderator-friendly "please post in English only!" rules. There was a thing with meatballs...

Is there anything from h2g2's past that you wish you hadn't witnessed?

Some of the trolling or exclusions weren't nice. Some of the personality clashes were quite bad - I do believe, however, that I were blessedly unaware of quite a lot of it.

What aspect of current h2g2 do you wish had been extant when you joined?

No particular thing springs to mind - though the community feeling of the takeover nicely matches the early days joys of finding the place.

Have you been to any meets, of any size, whether "official" or not (meet=over a dozen, minimeet=6-12, micromeet=less than a half dozen)?

Yep smiley - smiley

How many?

A few micro ones (Sir Bossel in Munich was the first one, also Ti in Stockholm and Hati here in DK), one or two minis (Melbourne Australia, a local one in DK (Pierce, Hati, Hapi, Tartaronne,...) and one big London one, that my dear non-hootoo wife gave me flight tickets for as a b'day present smiley - biggrin

Was my self portrait there?

At least at the London one, yes.

How many copies? smiley - silly

Believe I only saw one. Maybe some of the other you's had slipped under the table? smiley - silly

If you've been to multiple meets, what's the farthest you've traveled to one?

Melbourne, surely, sort of the other side of the world.

Am I asking too many questions?

Oh no smiley - zen

Is this getting annoying?

Oh no smiley - online2long

How about now?

Oh no smiley - tomato

If I were to give you a mufflewhump, what would it turn into, keeping in mind that they can't turn into anything sapient nor anything that can act against the giver's (ie, my) interest, and that they only work on h2g2?

A wee thing that whenever it has charged itself enough could instantly make me up-to-date with the conversations I'd like to be abreast of? With no orange buttons?

Had you even heard of mufflewhumps before the previous question?

Sure!

Have I given you one before?

Quite likely smiley - biggrin

Did you know me before this interview?

Very happily yes smiley - smiley

Do you have a question for me (fair's fair, after all) (not one answered on my PS)?

No - but I'd like to say that it is a smiley - cool idea and to give you smiley - applause for carrying it out.

Thank yousmiley - blush Of course, it would've been better had I not dropped it for months1, but at least I'm carrying it again.

Next time, we'll hear from Baron Grim.
