There must be a story here somewhere.smiley - erm

The ghastly murder committed in the middle of a Carnival. The criminals escaping into the crowd.

Or the Carnival parade turning into a lynch mob.

It must have been done - written that is. Though it may have been done, too.

There's always 'The Masque of the Red Death'. Isn't that Carnival?

Not the murder, though. Then there's 'The Cask of Amontillado', I can't remember if that takes place during Carnival, though.

I was thinking of The Wicker Man, though that's not really a carnival.

And there's Belfast on the 12th July... smiley - sadface

'evening all. sorry, didn't mean to go all spooky/negative on you. heheh. I was exploring my fractal fragments, which, of course, if you're me, all reside in the psyche, so the whole lot will come of the pepperpot, if I shake it. hmm I find it rather inspiring, but erm maybe it came out a bit weird. sorry.

I used to have really bad nightmares, which were like a weird edgy carnival, and I still can't go to parades. Kind of like a ritual-history of the world running through my head, and it got a bit fevered sometimes. Like the Mexican Day of the Dead during a panic attack, or Glastonbury Festival on the wrong side of 3 am.

Interesting, though, about negativity in writing. I kind of like trying to find the poetry of fear or panic, because it is so much part of my life experience. And by finding this expression, I don't feel negative at all. hmm Not great I guess if one is a performance poet or an entertainer, and, in fact, probably completely boring really. smiley - laugh I am compelled to go there, though, sometimes.

hmm. quite understand if not appropriate for here, and sorry if I have cast a dark cloud. perhaps I should shut up for a while. hmm

Funny old path, the artist path. I wouldn't choose it, if I had a choice, which I don't smiley - laugh.Full of delight and dangerhowl. I like to hope that I am still questing and yearning and burning and in love with poetry until my last gasp.

I'm on to fragments about windmills and watertowers now, oh yes. You wouldn't believe the poetry of a water tower. All those interesting shadows and echoes but also other watertower type things.

And a new type of writing. Strange juxtapositions of images. Quick flip sentences. Quite annoying really, heheh, if you have to live with me.

OK I'll shut up now. smiley - kiss

Hey Animal. heheh. I love the Muppets. Animal is so great. What a dear father you are, Prof.

And I feel I might have upset you, Prof, with what you find to be negative, and I sincerely apologise. It was totally unintentional, of course.

I find that when exploring writing and other creative outlets, things can take unusual turns. However, I have to make the journey. For me it is vocational, even though it can get a bit rough at times. Unfortunately, a lot of what I write can sound kind of nightmarish, even though it isn't, to me, although it might have had a nightmare as its origins. I just have that kind of brain, y'know.

However, I really am not into creating distress of any sort, and the last thing I would want is to upset you, or anyone else, with negativity.

So, hey, let's have a hot choccy, and good dreams, and onward we go. New pages, new stages. New day, new way, new .. OK you get the message smiley - laugh

heheh. OK. smiley - kiss yay Prof.

And in the spirit of things, I like to try to create new patterns from broken pieces. Especially if its me that broke the pieces in the first place, and, in this case, it is, albeit unintentionally. smiley - laugh. In other words, see what can come out of weird times. hmm. I find that weird times can be . I never was keen on the expression . What are its origins, I wonder?

However, along the curvy line I go.

What I have learned is this. Firstly, I tend to blend writing workshop with conversation. I don't mean to, it just happens that way, because I am always always always on about writing and the creative process, and I do go on bit, to put it mildly. heheh.

So I think for me I will set myself clearer boundaries. Conversation is conversation. A writing workshop is a totally different thing. It's a bit like cartoons. Things can happen in cartoons that can't happen in everyday life. I think cartoons can get really dark sometimes. smiley - laugh Like a cartoon mouse can jump over a cliff, get flattened, all things can happen to it, but then it can get up again and the cartoon can continue.

And I think the other thing is to do with creative writing. I don't know how the creative writing modules are going to be structured in the noohootoo. Perhaps it is a very difficult area, because the boundaries are more difficult to define than, say, writing for the EG.

Perhaps there should be different modules. Like Spooky Writing, or Humour Writing, and all types in between. And then whether it is poetry or short story or whatever. Then wandering weird artists like me can find the right category for the particular expression I am working on. Or the lock-up. heheh. The hootoo overnight lock up. As long as I get chocolate. smiley - choc.

I don't know. I would like a Writing from the Middle Way slot. However, for me, that would involve embracing the dark and the light sides of the human psyche, and bringing my poor character to a place of Middle Way.

In the case of my Carnival, this would have to happen, but I think I might shelve the story. hmm. Maybe bring it out again in the Spooky Writing Workshop. smiley - rofl.

If it is a disturbing posting in this thread I am happy to arrange for it to be withdrawn.

In the name of Art. smiley - rofl. And because I am essentially quite nice really, despite my voyages into the outer reaches of inner space.

I don't think you should try to avoid the dark side, cc.

You can't have light without darkness, life without death, good without evil. Surely they are interwoven.

And Prof's story of the disabled men and the ghost is an example of humour looking over the edge of the abyss and drawing back.

Amen to that, MVP.

I also agree wholeheartedly with CC about how there's no line - in this h2g2 or any other - between conversation and literary endeavour.

Why, you can get poetic just talking about the weather, you people. smiley - winkeye

We're hoping in the next incarnation to have even more of that going on all over the place, never fear.

Maybe we're sort of like one of those Broadway musicals. You know, without warning, the characters burst into song?

Ooh, I like an Oracle. heheh. I'll be there. Every time I try to leave this site,I get lured by Oracles or Sages, or conversations that suddenly break out in opera. heheh, ah well. I shall bring you flowers, and teabags. smiley - tea. what? The Oracle. Gifts. Bringing gifts to the Oracle.

It's true, mvp. There is no life without death, light without dark, and all the layers and textures of the psyche. Of course, this is my passion. Ah yes yes yes. To find a safe kind of a space, with others, to explore these things in writing, or other arts, is quite rare I think. I would always be on for a protected themed module if it came to that. A writing course entitled This Could Get Weird But We're Working On It. heheh. I'm not running it though. You guys are. hahasmiley - rofl. hmm. I'm a student. smiley - rofl..

Hello everybody, I just want to say I'm enjoying this conversation a lot. Not posting but reading! It's almost too cold to post here! I have to take my gloves off and can't handle that for too long. There's nowt wrong with bubble and squeak.smiley - smiley

My mother used to make it, as a way of using leftover potatoes and cabbage. It came out brown and crunchy.

My attempts at recreating the dish have not been very successful. Perhaps you need to fry the mixture in lard, while I, being all health conscious, use sunflower oil.

Post 319

How do you make this? I've only heard the name, and I couldn't tell you.

If it uses potatoes and cabbage, is it like Colcannon?

I like the song, but I don't know about Colcannon.

If I had a recipe for bubble and squeak it would go like this:

potatoes, boiled and cubed
cabbage, chopped and boiled or steamed
salt and pepper to taste
sunflower oil

Heat oil in frying pan until sizzling. Spoon in mixture of cabbage and potato, with salt and pepper to taste. Fry until lightly browned, turning several times. Eat hot.

I don't know why it's called bubble and squeak, or which is the bubble and which the squeak.
smiley - laugh

My brother, who has spent most of his adult life in the States, once asked me if I ever made bubble and squeak. When I answered 'rarely', he admitted that he'd asked me to convince his American-born wife that the dish actually existed and wasn't a figment of his imagination.
