Pierce, was the modding on an h2g2 thread?

IIRC the house rules here have a warning that you "should think carefully" before posting your own email addresses, but it's not specifically banned. If you tried to post something that looked like someone else's address, though, it'll be modded away.

Pierre de la Mer ~ sometimes slightly worried but never panicking ~

it was on a h2g2 thread and i specifically wrote that it was my company's address and how safe it was (it is VERY safe - has to be - or my company would go under)

so why the smiley - bleep moderate it?

if it endangered auntie beeb or anyone else, i would understand

smiley - pirate

Could it be that your personal email address would have gone through, but your company's address might have posed problems for people not involved in H2G2? Just wondering.

Probably a legal nightmare for the BBC if anything goes wrong.

Well, nowadays it´s no longer "what might go wrong" but "who´ll get the blame for the remote possibility it might go wrong"
O tempora o mores.

Taff, I don't get why you have such a problem with the idea that the BBC may already have a buyer for h2g2. I *do* understand why the BBC no longer owning h2g2 is a big blow to you, just not why already having a buyer would be (not that I think there is one yet--if it had been known far enough in advance to the announcement for the wheels to be turning, I think things would've been handled better. Heck, would they have bothered to roll out Barlesque 4 days beforehand--after all, if they'd already had a buyer lined up, that buyer would've already seen the current functional skins?)

Then again, I never claimed to be the smoothest sheet in the ream.

I'm worried that the BBC have already lined up a buyer who won't let us "roll back" to the old skin system. The remote chance of that happening is the *only* silver lining in our parting from the BBC.

For anyone who likes the new look, there's *nothing* preventing us replicating it as a skin. It's just that the skin system itself was shunned by the BBC.

Now, *that* I understand. Of course, that's a possibility whether there was a buyer before last week, or one is found months from now.

As the new buyer will have to implement their own login system, I hope we get the opportunity to ask for long (128-character) names back with full punctuation before they pay someone to code it differently. smiley - geek

Taff will have to give his reasons. But for me its to do with whether we have just been 'stitched up like a kipper' over the whole new design and reasons. It's about whether the beeb is looking to sell us to something that would really suit h2g2, and is still looking around or a highest bidder has already been found.

There's a lot of internal politics going on in the UK to do with media. Before the last election it was clear that the Tories were getting into bed with Murdoch, he spends most of his time beeb bashing, and as soon as it was announced that Licence fee was to be frozen for 3 years, and the beeb would have to start paying for the world service and other stuff like Welsh language stuff I knew big cuts were coming to the beeb, but I thought we'd be safe as website stuff is much cheaper than programme making..but I was woefully wrong.

One good bit of news recently though is that Murdoch's power is now not so strong because its come out about one of his news papers allegedly being involved with 'certain practices'..sorry can't be precise for obvious reasons...but I'm going way off beam here.

But I'm trying to stay hopeful and I totally believe the Eds *here* have our best interests at heart..I just hope it isn't just all a 'piece of paper' (British reference).

OK, I can understand that, too. But acting like my youngest* when she can't wear shoes (no idea where she got a love of shoes--I much prefer being barefoot) isn't going to help anything, whatever the case ends up being.

There's people here working their butts off at present for us. And smiley - applause to them. I'm trying to do my bit by finally contributing to the Guide. It looks good to an outside organisation that stuff is happening. Or if we are to fund raise and go it alone.

Baron Grim

He's got a point. But that's what work's for him. He doesn't have anonymity. I do. He's accepted that he's going to get some amount of spam. If you accept that, then he's absolutely correct.

But get this. I don't.

I don't get spam. (Well, I get some at my work email, but more on that in a bit.) Do I think it's because I've kept my email secret? Not exactly. I actually don't mind PEOPLE knowing my address. It's on my space(our version). I don't share my address with advertisers. I don't "log in to see if you've won", that sort of thing. The main thing I did was break my address up with a special character. When I had a basic address like "[email protected]" I'd get lots of broadcast spam. "[email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]" all were in the the "to" list. I added one dot and one number,"[email protected]" and my spam stopped. Basically by not giving my address to someone who I know would add it to a list and by altering it just enough to avoid the shotgun blast approach, I eliminated ALL my spam. (I know, I'm still amazed.) At work, our addresses are all in a "global" address list. If they get one compromised computer, one trojan that can send addresses to everyone in that user's address list, they've got them all. No stopping that. Our spam filters are pretty good. Very rarely does any spam actually make it to my inbox.

But yea, other than that, I completely agree with Cory that it's rather pointless hiding your address on public forums. Spammers can get your address that way, but they'd much rather get them in such a way that might indicate that you're more likely to bite. Registering for some commercial promotion, or adding your address to a chain letter is much riskier. If you're gullible enough to do that, then you're probably gullible enough to want to buy some V14GARA from a Canadian pharmacy.

(To the smiley - mods: All those addresses above are fictitious.)
