I've just had a thought - if we managed to get a redirection from www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2 to the new url - that might still work for people who need to access h2g2 at work.

It sounds awful being alone for that long every night.

I don't normally add fuel to the fire, but I've been thinking a lot about this.
While normally, I'd agree- anger solves nothing. I think in this case Taff has every right to vent. For the rest of us, it may just mean a bit of new adjustment once we find new owners. From what I gather, for Taff it means loosing h2g2 all together.

Sometimes you need to express your anger in order to deal with it, and what better place to express it, than among a community of friends who can support you.

I didn't take any of his outburst personally, and I would like to hope others didn't either. Like he said, he wasn't sounding off at us, it was at the BBC. I understand the BBC may not have much choice in this, but the fact still remains that without the BBC Taff looses h2g2. I know if I were in the same position, I'd be devastated.

Taff, I hope you can find a way to stay with us.

I'm afraid that news item simply illustrates a tendency of the PR branch of politicians' offices to exaggerate a problem in order to make it 'newsworthy'. (I applaud the BBC for covering the faux controversey, anyway. That shows extreme fairness.)

Reading between the lines: obviously, an assistant director got a little overzealous in trying to make the storyline of the 'reality' show more exciting.

It seems to me that getting volunteers to show exactly what effects certain budget cuts would have on a community is an excellent notion. Not scare-mongering at all. Using a tv show instead of writing a grant for a sociological study means less money wasted and a better public for the results. (How many people read scholarly journals? Raise your hands.)

And I've lived in German cities when they had no laws to make dog-walkers police after their dogs. It can get serious. smiley - winkeye

*raises hand* I am a geek though, and they are for work.

Well a TV show would give something entertaining and a sociology study would actually try and get to the truth... though they are sociologists so they probably say truth is a social construct and go out for a pint smiley - winkeye.

Seriously journals do have an impact, the BMJ has made a huge impact these last few weeks, with publishing the de-bunking of MMR. Ok it's a bit of a comic and not a real journal. Nature and Science also have huge readerships,

But actually I think that it sounds like the TV show was an interesting idea, people might not realise what should be cut. It seems like it was a BBC show that was making people think about public spending, which isn't a bad thing. Ironically h2g2 was discussing public spending cuts months before this show.

*also raises hand* I used to do it a lot - for my work. I miss the access I don't have now, since I can't afford them. No disrespect intended to academic journals, which should have larger readerships. smiley - smiley

But I did think the show was a interesting idea - and could reach an audience not attuned to those pub-crawling sociologists. smiley - winkeye

'Reality' shows sponsored by the BBC and US PBS have done good practical research into historical issues. I remember 'Iron Age Celts' trying to smelt iron quite fondly. Okay, maybe the Regency house party was just sexy, but still...

This is why having the freedom to pursue knowledge - soup to nuts - is important enough to fund. It might even help with getting the trash picked up.

No, I agree the show did seem to be an interesting idea. Hopefully it could get people thinking..

I'm a fan of open access journals, they should be the way forward, most of the BMJ's research is open access, I wish more were that way. Science is not for a paywall.

Those who write the papers don't get paid, those who review them don't get paid, the editors don't get paid, who does get the money?

Hmmm.

See, I can only access certain sites from work too - BBC being one of them. So in the future it's possible I might not be able to hoot in working hours smiley - tongueout

But, y'know, it's access from work. There's rules about that. Quite rightly. I'd feel a bit awkward about complaining loudly about the loss of something that was tbh a perk, not a right. Just sayin.

i understand perfectly

my beef is, i was alone in a dark box in the corner and i was happy

then i discovered hootoo and it was like the lid of the box was opened and the box was in the same room as a party

now i am being told that the lid of the box is going to get closed and its back to the dark for me, while the party moves to another room

"Yeah well maybe the new community is only for certain sorts of people.

I like the idea of being part of a community that makes allowances for people's differences, struggles and personal circumstances..."

Well getting annoyed at and abusing the BBC isn't going to do anything to help them find us a new home.Frankly I find your defeatism rather tedious and extremely unhelpful.

I remember what it was like when we were first displaced and the quite long wait until we were found a new home. The community DID NOT give up, it merely set up a yahoo club site and did the best it could whilst waiting to see what would happen.

How about being positive instead of bursting with negativity.

After all if we were that crappy a proposition for the BBC why did they hold us for 10 years?

Actually the most used Yahoo group during Rupert (h2g2chat) was set up by the staff before the site was closed. I think that was a very good thing, as we surely weren't as organized then as we are now? smiley - winkeye

Its a pretty unpleasant poke in the eye for us lot isnt it Taff smiley - sadface Much like Taff I will not be giving up hootoo, but will not be around as much as I am now. H2G2 was a much needed and entertaining outlet for those of us stuck on our own all night with just BBC to keep us company.
