Thanks h2g2 for giving me pleasure, making me work hard as a volunteer , and giving me the incentive to write about the things I know!

So Paully, if I did pay the license fee could I enter the competitions?
The question is, of course, where I'm going to come up with 126.50.
28 April, 2005: h2g2 is Six!
I guess you always could try to pay... but that doesn´t change geography
It´s something very British, this "overseas" thingy - you find it everywhere - regardless of fees..

Mort - a middle aged Girl Interrupted Posted Apr 30, 2005
You can pay mine for me if you want and i'll enter the comps on your behalf
OK - only joking - no need to phone the lawyers

Going back to this "Overseas" thing. "Overseas" does not equal "Over the Sea" - right? Because if I lived on the Isle of Wight I'd be able to pay a licence fee - right?
And now, back to BFN - if I was in the British Army and posted in Hannover (or Addis Abeba, come to that), I'd be able to enter - right?

'Overseas' isn't necessarily a British thing, I don't think. My mother always talks about sending the 'overseas' Christmas cards a couple weeks early, and that sort of thing. But it's very dispiriting to have to always be checking 'outside the UK' on the little boxes and thus missing out on stuff. I think simple access to more BBC stuff would be a very good reason to move to the UK someday.

Oh, I'm such an Anglophile that I love everything about England (and the rest of the UK, of course). You try living in America for 15 years - it is very trying on one.

I suppose the grass is always greener and all that.
It's just that when anyone looks at another country all you see are the headlines and either the best that it has to offer or the worst.
It's only when you have experienced it for any length of time can you judge wether it is better than home or not.
And by then it's probably too late to do anything about it

Absolutely!
I don't actually mind paying the licence fee but the BBC is British and I suppose it's only fair that competitions are only open to the licence payers. If h2g2 was run by NBC for example, I'd be disappointed I couldn't enter competitions as I don't live in the US but I wouldn't mind.

'Overseas' may have something to do with the medieval concept of 'Outremer'. Which isn't just the same term in Old French: 'Outremer' was everywhere that wasn't Christendom and was used quite a lot during the crusades (where they went to Outremer and tried to turn it into Christendom).
Isle of Wight is oversolent anyway

Paully Posted May 3, 2005
Hi EMR
I don't believe that it's possible for people living overseas (ie, outside the UK) to purchase a TV licence - I think they can only be issued to UK households. So, sorry, I'm afraid the competition is still a no-no...
Really sorry not to be able to be the bearer of better tidings.
Paully
