Anyway, I could chat all night about how great Notts is (Notts County first established Football Team...smiley - tongueout) BUT, I wondered are the entries about each county concentrating on the county, or the city central to them, such as Nottingham, Lincoln, York etc, and surely these major cities deserve entries in themselves...

AH-HA! I have found out this cunningly disguised plan!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understood that we/they -whoever- are collecting anything any researcher is willed to submit,(to the topic of the thread) and then, after a while, some volunteers will make an entry of the data smiley - puff

Well, I wish I could help, but most of my knowledge about counties comes from listening to the intros from wherever I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue is spending the week.

I'll just read everyone's terrific entries!

Mol, the basic format of the Devon page is at A6021505. I'm putting it together; please post any history sections on F150575?thread=1145318 where you'll find an outline of how we'll put it together. I would really appreciate it if you have some great work on it already - especially the history sections - that can be dropped in smiley - ok

This is a fantastic idea, by the way. I've certainly looked at the current Devon entry for a long time - I know Parferris has too - and thought how inadequate it is, but it's a massive subject for one person to handle. The idea of so many people contributing to one Great Entry surely makes this the greatest Researcher project there has ever been. This is something to which every UK user (and many beyond) can contribute. I'm genuinely excited about the whole thing!

In fact, I'm so into this that I'd say if anyone is struggling to get a page on a county together, I'd be happy help to draw the strands in. I'm sure there are going to be one or two places where the information is there, but perhaps not the editing experience to make it into a coherant entry. If anyone wants me to, I'll gladly do a kind of 'sub job' at any stage (from proofreading to putting it all together) - just let me know on my PS if you need any help.

This is, of course, merely a cunning ploy to get every other county's entry to start with the words 'Though not as wonderful as Devon...' smiley - evilgrin

I'd like to help out on the Derbyshire section. I thought that I'd put a little starter on the other thread; but would like someone to tell me where I went wrong cos it didn't come out like the other entries, when I looked at it. Hellllllllp

Just to say that I hope someoen is willing to copy and paste the material from here over to the Nottingham conversation smiley - winkeye

If you have comments about specific Counties, please do make them in the dedicated conversations and not on here, where they might be missed. And also, this is a project specifically about *Counties* and *regions*, so entries about specific towns, cities and streets will not be included in this and should go via the normal Peer Review route.

We know it might have been a bit overwhelming to find all of those separate conversations, but we thought that would be better than leaving out a county (or Scottish Region). We're looking for those entries that will act as the next step down from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales and link to the specific towns and cities.

By the way, we already have an entry on Rockall - A755787 - which will be linked to the nearest part fo the mainland once we have an entry on The Highlands & Islands.

No; I believe that the United Kingdom is every island of the group, apart from those belonging to the Irish Republic and the Republic itself.

The term 'Great Britain' relates to the whole of the British Isles, including the Irish Republic and its own islands. The Irish are a British race, whether they like it or lump it. Being British is not a political stance or question, it is a matter of pure geographical fact!

I'm afraid you're completely wrong about that! 'Great Britain' never referred to Ireland--that's why the UK used to be the 'United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Ireland' and is now the 'United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland.' smiley - biggrin It's clearly a union of two separate entities.

As for the Irish being a British race...smiley - roflsmiley - run
Even if you look back on the old Celtic settlers, the British (Welsh, Cornish, and Breton) branch were a separate lot from the Irish.

No, the British Isles may or may not include the whole of Irish; not something I'm completely tipped up on but have always thought it was true.

Great Britain however means England, Wales and Scotland, it does not include Ireland. If you don't believe this go look at your (if you are British) passport and it will read on the top The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Ergo, what I said earlier.

The Cornish, however, are not a seperate country however much they'd like to think

Can we ask people to keep this project on topic, please? We're doing a project that is looking for entries on counties (and in Scotland on regions). We're not really looking for a debate on what the term 'UK' or 'Britain' actually means just now.
