I'm 16, so I can't vote. Does that mean I can't get annoyed with the governement? I'm only having to cope with the screwed up education system and the NHS, and not to mention having to abide by the laws they make... smiley - winkeye
Sorry about going away from the topic of lunch, btw... but I'll only get hungry... smiley - winkeye

Ming-Mang....not to worry, your time will come!

At your age you can be aggravated, but you can't bitch. That comes at voting age...till then, you'll have to depend on your parents' opinions!

When you're old enough to vote, maybe you and yours can do something about the things in this government you don't like.

GOVERNMENT TO BAN TEENAGE WHINING

In an unexpected development, David Blunkett has introduced legislation to ban under-16s from 'bitching'. Mr. Blunkett defied critics who said he was fighting against years of childhood tradition by saying: "If the Conservatives can try and buck the market, why can't I try to buck the flow of hormones?"

Under the proposed legislation, any teenagers caught expressing a 'Non-Positive Attitude' would be rounded up by the 'Positivity Police', and escorted to their piggy bank to pay an instant fine. The Tories struck back, saying that the government was blatantly stealing from Anne Widdecombe's policy on drugs. The shadow home secretary explained: "Labour has obviously run out of stupid ideas of their own, so they're trying to take some of ours. But it won't work - we're more stupid than they'll ever be!"

The Liberal Democrats raised concerns of enforcability, but aren't important enough to merit a quote, even in a parody. But a specially unaccountable government adviser rejected this: "With modern technology, we can place a chip by the side of children's mouths, which will instantly detect any use of the frowning muscles, and alert passers by to this gross violation of the law."

Meanwhile, civil liberties campaigners are already planning legal action to challenge the new law, with the unlikely assistance of Nivea Skin Creams. Explaining their company's newfound interest in human rights, a company spokensman clarified: "We don't care about liberal issues, but this is going to wreck sales of our anti-wrinkle cream!"

But really, we're the people who know how badly the education system is messed up, yet we don't even get to say how badly it is messed up?

Oh well, don't mind me, I'm just a minor, I can't be trusted to have an opinion worth listening to...

Election

Post 812

Linus...42, i guess that makes me the answer...

There is a report in the Sydney Morning Herald today about how the results of a study conducted by a whole bunch of media types( including the Wall Street journal, Washington post, New York times and CNN) analysing the contested Florida votes from last years election has been suppressed.

I was wondering if any of our American friends have heard anything about this?

The SMH story came from the Telegraph in London by the looks of it so i assume it probably broke some time over the weekend.

Old news. Several newspapers and media outlets performed their own recount and came up with W winning. All was reported months ago. Haven't heard any recent news about the election. However, have heard that Al Gore's followers are privately glad W is in the Whitehouse. Seems they believe if their man was in this crisis situation, he and his leftovers from the Clinton administration would be having a tougher time of it. Democrats lauding the Republican administration? It's true - Wall Street Journal a couple of weeks ago.

This article was saying quite the opposite. That the recount of the invalidated votes had Gore clearly winning.

As to whether Gore would be doing a better or worse job, who knows. From how i see it pretty much the same people would be pulling the strings behind the scenes anyway

Voter apathy is a result of sham democracy

Goens001,

"...people who don't vote don't get to b***h about the government..."

If the system worked democratically, that would be true.

In school they told us that in order for an election to be democratic (not rigged), there must be at least two choices which are significantly different from each other. If there's no difference between the candidates, then you'll get the same policies no matter which side you vote for.

I believe that's why so many Americans skip voting. Democrats and Republicans have a strangle-hold on the system, and have set things up so that no other parties can have more than limited success. Look at the all-or-none system of the Electoral College, or the group of Democrats and Republicans who control the Presidential debates.

Pundits talk about "voter apathy" and can't understand why people feel that their votes don't matter. The obvious explanation is that Americans recognize that Democratic and Republican platforms are not significantly different on substantial issues, and that other parties are shut out by the Dems and Republicans. So the problem is not that *my* vote doesn't matter because it's lost in a sea of millions of other votes. The problem is that *any* vote doesn't matter when the government will be run the same way after the election, taxes will still be collected, homeless people will still freeze to death, healthcare will still be a topic focused on insurance companies instead of people, death of Iraqi children via sanctions will be rationalized by Madeline Albright the same as by Colin Powell, etcetera.

People who choose not to participate in a sham election should not be expected to remain silent when they feel the government or the system has failed them.
