SPINY (aka Ship's Cook)

Well, I'll be! Just when I could do with a drink, too. And no doubt you too, Mi...er...Uli. That Mr Martens must have been back here when we was a-killing the creature, for he is the only one who knows there is a secret cupboard. Well, I only hope he's sensible and doesn't let the Captain see him with a bottle. Meanwhile I shall have to tap some more from the hold and distill it with my rig. Not a word of this to anyone, mind Uli. I'm happy to share the spirits as long as the Captain doesn't get to find out.

Do your people drink the..uh..firewater, Uli? I would think perhaps not if you are unaccustomed to the smell, for that is inded the reek of raw alcohol you are smelling. I'll wager you have other things which change your perception of the world, for I have noticed on my travels that all peoples have something they consume for recreation. But, good lady, you still have not told me who your people are?

I drink water or herbal teas. It is dangerous to alter your mind without reason! A shaman may have need of certain mushrooms when a dangerous journey to the Spirit Land is necessary, but we trade for those and they are very rare.

*looking over the hide as she scrapes* I think I can use this skin of the belly for a drum, yes. Ayungii!

*glancing over at Cook* My people are the Inuit. My tribe the Nunavut. We call our place Iqaluit, the whites call it and all the land to the south by the name Kanata. Among my people I speak Inuktitut.

I will not tell your shipmaster but I am sorry he does not know everything that happens on his ship.

I know what happened to your drink.

Ancestors! Hear me!

*springs to her feet*

Well I fought in all our winter contests,
Straight and true my aim! I never miss.
Salmon fins I flicked from forked bones
And nailed with spear a thumb-sized fleck of hide.

Let the ancestors fill my empty hand
Now, with spirit spear! And guide the shaft
Unerring, to the target that I name:
Pin that drunken ghost's sleeve to the wall!

*hefts an invisible spear on her shoulder then hurls it toward the far wall of the galley*

Ghost, this is one of my powers, given in my character description.

Cook, a ghost raids your cupboards. Have you coffee brewed?

*sweeping one of the coffee cups off the floor, Uli pours out some coffee, approaches the wall at which she threw an imaginary spear, and appears to tip the coffee to the floor... except that the coffee disappears*

*She closes her eyes and stands still*

*Uli mutters something in her own language and makes several odd motions, then opens her eyes and looks around*

*Picking up the coffee cups and replacing them on the counter, she returns to her seat, picks up the knife, and continues debriding the skin*

Cook, you would do well not to make any more drink with alcohol for the next few days. You will need all your wits about you!

*casually* These are nice juicy meat scraps. Would the cat eat them? It eats meat, yes?

There is no brew of alcohol here, and a dead man would not drink the coffee.
