Um, what holiday is the UK celebrating,
Bagheera?
The U.S. won't have any holidays until
the first Monday in September, when we'll
celebrate Labor Day. Actually, the U.S.
has no holidays at all in August.

Don't cry, Bagheera.
Thanks for the cyber-ale. It's the thought that counts.
I keep meaning to create some holidays for August and
try to sell the idea to the powers-that-be, but I always
lose my energy when August arrives, and nothing ever
comes of it.

Got just the thing for you!!!
This weekend is a 3-day nostalgia pigout in Liverpool, the Mathew Street Festival is always held at this time of year and anything with the vaguest connection to THE BEATLES is top of the agenda.
I'm told that their popularity in the US is still almost as keen as it was when they were together and proving to the world just how music OUGHT to sound.
Couldn't a National Beatles Day be as good an excuse as is needed for a Public Holiday?

I have full confidence that the greeting card companies will create something to celebrate in August in order to sell more cards. After the Halloween cards with the sentiment "Thinking of you..." nothing would surprise me.
*campaigns for more three or four day weekends*

Hearing Beatles music always makes
me feel young again.
They had such incredible charm and
zest for life. How did they do all that
they did in such a short time?
Yes, any new books about, or reissued
recordings by the Beatles sell out
rapidly here in the U.S.
It's hard to think of anyone since the Beatles
that has been so universally appreciated.
I'm not counting Elvis, because he was a
contemporary of the Beatles, though he is
arguably as popular.
(Hope I'm not on thin ice here. Elvis is
still wildly popular here, too.)

Selling Hallowe'en cards, Evangeline? Bit late starting, aren't they?
I saw my first Christmas advert in the Press last week, and it wasn't even a UK newspaper!!
It appears even conservatively-minded Sweden is beginning to be affected by the 'advance publicity campaign' bug: a respectable regional paper had an advert on Monday 12 August for girsl (age 11 - 18, I think)to audition for a 5000-voice CHOIR to walk the streets of Gothenberg to mark Santa Lucia [December 12, and an ENORMOUS feast day throughout Scandinavia]

It was a couple of years ago in a local store. I was looking for a birthday card to send to a friend. Found the birthday card and started browsing...and there it was and a on the front and "thinking of you..." on the inside.
We still have back to school displays and Halloween costumes on sale. No sign of Christmas ornaments yet(thank goodness). I refuse to decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving and/or my Birthday, whichever comes last.
