Titania (gone for lunch) Posted May 23, 2013
Well, I was born and raised in Sweden by Finnish parents. I went to Swedish school, had Swedish friends, but we always spoke Finnish at home.
I felt completely Swedish until... hmmm... around my late teens, when my Finnish heritage insisted on being recognized by my conscious mind, not only my subsconsious mind *glares at the thrice locked and bolted door*
Did I find it useful to grow up with two languages existing side by side? Yes.
Did it confuse me? No, not really. Not until my late teens but then, I guess everyone is sort of confused at some time during their teens, right?
Would I have preferred to grow up with only one language? no! It would have robbed me of a part of who I am, no matter how remote.
I could easily identify the missing jigzaw piece because I was already familiar with the other part of the puzzle.

Amy, that will last only until you hear me sing
mini, I didn't really grow up with anything but Danish. My languages are more like what you mention - a built-in ability. Out of heriditary luck, I assume - my Dad was very musical and my mother is (well, used to be) very adept at grammar but without a tone in her. So I got some of both - a good mix for learning languages and appreciating music but alas not enough to arrive at playing music myself.

um... am I allowed to come in? I'm kind of half lurking this thread for years on and off but posting makes me feel like an intruder.
I wanted to say that I have two cousins who grew up with German and Spanish as their languages and they also learned English very early. I don't think it did them any harm. They speak German at school of course and both German and Spanish at home.

Tavaron! I'm sure you will welcomed by our hostess when she's around! Meanwhile, I believe IIEM can bring you a drink of your choice.
I think I'll have a please, by the way!

- I just jumped in, as well all know everyone loves my noisiness and general verbosity

Tav, it's good to see you here! Please make yourself at home.
I'm tired -- it was a night of regular interruptions for follow-up on a routine procedure the details of which I won't go into here, nothing alarming... but when the nurse walked in at 7 am to tell me I had a dental appointment and would be picked up at 8:30, I went a little ballistic, in a sleepy sort of way.
I actually have plans, things to do today. Transportation can't go treating residents like luggage -- what if I had people visiting me from Lincoln? Or Manchester??
Anyway, there's no way I'd go to a dentist, a new dentist that I never saw before, without a couple of ativan percolating through my system.
A contrite representative of the transportation office came in later with details of an appointment about three weeks from now. Now that's proper respect.

NoisyBadger!
Hey, do you still have that dang trophy from Noesis? I think you owe me one, where it comes to braggin' rights over ownership.
And...um...like he said, "Just jump in." We don't bite...much. Since you've been lurking, you know how we are and how we function. Just post and let the chips fall where they may. Who knows; you may spark an extended conversation that spans a large number of LEDs and perhaps transitions to the next forum...

Thanks everybody.
I'm very tired today. I worked 3 1/2 hours without lunchbreak and now had to go to my parents' house to feed the cat and water the plants and we have to spend the night with the cat but we don't really have anything to do here. They are on holidays until Thursday although I told them I have no time because we are still in the middle of moving to the new apartment.

My phone has auto updated Opera, the browser I usually use, and this is the biggest step backward I've seen in a browser since IE8. It's truely awful.
And there's no way to roll back.
