Speaking of Milltown, yesterday I called on a house there for the suspiciously low rent of (for this area, anyway) $350. In a moment of unbelieveable honesty, the landlord described the house as "primitive"--no oven or kitchen, only a woodstove to cook on.

Presumably it had an indoor bathroom, FG?

fg, I will call my old landlord and see if he knows of anything. My house was incredibly cheap, so let me see what I can find.

That reminds me, Caer, of a friend of MR's and mine. To save money while she was in college she lived in a cheap hovel of an apartment here where the gas-heated hot water tank sat in a corner of the bedroom and the toilet was in the kitchen.

Blech. What a place for a toilet.
The amount you end up paying for mortgage is always comparable to what you pay for rent, otherwise people would not rent. Because they would not be able to recoup the mortgage, plus there would be wear and tear, and a loss in the long run. So contrary to the way it seems at first, you often really can afford to buy. It's just the down payment that's a killer, but that's what the first-time homeowner's programs are for.
I've said it before - West Nile Virus is overhyped. Unfortunately it really is very dangerous for horses, but for humans it is no more or less dangerous than the flu. Most people never even realize that they had it.

Weddign rehersal done and plans made. I will be going to the church to stand by a friend as he looses his bachelorhood and becomes part of a union of two lovely people.
The cool thing is that the groom gave myself and the rest of the groomsmen pocket flasks filled with spirits. We can have that last toast at the churhc tomorrow.

I just received the chop I ordered, and it is, like, totally awesome.
*dope-slaps self*
Sorry, I've been watching VH-1 this evening, got hooked on a series called "I Love the 70's", and watched 1977 through 1979. Fortunately I was not living in America at the time and was spared some of the worst, but when they played the opening bars of "Stayin' Alive", my legs began to twitch. I was a disco diva, once...
Anyway, the chop is a phonetic rendition of 'Asteroid Lil.' What is cool is that the chop-maker, a man in California named Andy Chuang, emailed me to inquire more about who I was, because your interests and personality determine which phoneme-ideograms he decides to include. Initially, when you fill in the online order, you list your interests on a separate line, and I included such things as computers, art and 42.
The purpose of the chop is to stamp the back of giclées and prints that I create, and eventually I'll add them to watercolors as and when I put them up for sale. I'll scan a print from the chop and copy the "meaning certificate" for the ideograms. Sort of boils down to white jasmine (Li) with qualities of refinement and scholarship.
And for some strange reason, Matina decided to

That's very cool, Lil. I am currently making a baby quilt for a friend of mine who is due in october. Hopefully I will be able to get a picture of it posted when it's done.

You can pay thousands for a 'wood burning stove', they are quite coveted items and some even get left in wills! I'm talking about Agas and Rayburns, of course. We have talked about them in a previous thread.
Do post a photo, Marv, I shall look forward to seeing it. I hope you have a lovely day today.
Cassie was out all night again. When I went to look for her, she was on next door's garage roof, far too interested in the flying around to come in. We were woken at 5.30 to the sound of a fight, I rushed downstairs to see 'bruiser' (our name for the large white and tabby from an adjacent house) disappearing up the garden and no sign of Cassie. So H went out to investigate and found her under my car, looking triumphant!

Good for Cassie
FG, good luck on the house hunting, I know it can be hard work. When I had to move out (due to my landlady wanting her flat back) I ended up in a much nicer place. It's still scarey in the meantime.
Good luck on the publicity Lil. I must admit I though 'lamb' when you spoke of a chop! is it some sort of stamp?

I'm still weeding - have made it to the travel section. Will go in early and see if I can get through the biographies before we close today.
I've scheduled a book sale for September 6. That's the last day we'll be open before the move. Then we'll have a month to get everything moved and organized. Which may be a good trick since I still don't have a firm date for delivery of our building (sometime between the 2nd and the 15th of Sept)or for the installation of our data line (maybe the first week of Oct) and the man who has the t-bars for my warehouse shelving has locked them up in his garage and gone on vacation, meaning that I can't build the stupid shelves until he gets back.
I know it's early, but Matina I could use a
