Hush we're working out a lesson for you, and I have to work it out in English before we can do it in German and it's surprisingly more difficult in English
Besides, where's Chris? For that matter....where's any of our German students?

I have a couple of questions about pronounciation 'cause for this year of German at school we has to get a German/English dictionary, and I have been flipping through it, and while doing so I realised there are a couple of things I don't know how to say. First of all, "y", I only saw it in a couple of words, and I can't remember what they were, but I think one was the German word for guy and it possibly had a "t" in it too... And also "oo", which I saw in the wrod "U-Boot" which I thought was a very cute looking word, and my sister agreed. Anyway, sorry about bugging you with this. *goes off to bed*

I suppose the word for „guy“ you’re looking for is „der Typ“. Here the “y” is pronounced like the German “ü”. Some more examples:
die Mystik – mysticism
mystisch – mystic
die Lyrik – lyric (poetry)
lyrisch – lyrical
die Myrrhe – myrrh
When it stands the beginning of words it’s pronounced like the German “j” (= like the English “y” in the following cases):
Yoga – yoga
Yak – yak
U-Boot: the “oo” is simply pronounced like the German “o”…similar to the English “o” in “more”, but not at all like the English “oo” in “rubber boot”.
(“U” stands for “Untersee” by the way (=under the sea), so U-Boot is an abbreviation for “Unterseeboot”. This is similar to “U-Bahn”: here the “U” stands for “Untergrund” (=underground), and means underground/subway.)
Any more questions?

Glad you knew what Dani meant, I wondered about a y and a t in 'Junge' (boy), which was the only word that popped up in my mind when I read the posting this afternoon

My dictionary gave me a helping hand. The first word for “guy” that came into my mind was “der Kerl”. Not too many “t”s and “y”s in there either!

Exactly! Mein Vater hat im U-boot gehabt und er hasst es. Just a bit of German thrown in there
(My father has been in a submarine and he hated it).
He was a submariner for 10 years.

I think Dani was alluding to the word itself, what it looks like, the order of letters, maybe the "U" followed by a hyphen...

correction:
Mein Vater war in einem U-Boot und er hasste es.
We all live in a yellow submarine... I bet he hates that song!

Ja aber jetz hasst er mich und meine Mutter...actually I'll email you about that maybe...not everyone wants to hear perhaps. Although I've already splashed it everywhere. Oh stuff it whatever.

Yeah, I was saying that the word "U-Boot" looked cute, not that submarines are cute... although they can be cute, like if they're in a cartoon then they are, and also when you're talking about how an ostrich in a bush looks like there's a submarine, and the next is the periscope.
Hmmm.... *runs off to find her dictionary to find the word she was ranting about earlier* Aha! der Typ, the guy. *smiles and is glad she didn't imagine the word.
