Freut mich dich hier zu treffen! Ich war während der letzten Tage nicht online, weil ich viel zu tun hatte. Ich frage mich wo Bel und Katkat sind!

In der Unterhaltung oben ging’s darum wer Captain des German Departments ist... KJ steht für Kathryn Janeway – sie war Captain auf Raumschiff Voyager. Und weil Katkats Vorname auch Kathryn ist, bildet sie sich ein, dass sie der Captain ist. Interessant, hm?

Nice to meet you here! I wasn’t online throughout the last few days, because I was very busy. I’m asking myself where Bel and Katkat are!

The conversation above was about who is Captain of The German Department… KJ stands for Kathryn Janeway – she was the captain of Starship Voyager. And Katkat’s first name is Kathryn as well, now she thinks that she should be captain. Interesting, huh?

Uuups, I nearly forgot : 'bildet sie sich ein ( sich etwas einbilden, inf.) - "ein" being important for the meaning, cause there are different meanings depending on whether it's 'ein', or 'fort', or 'weiter' etc.

Natürlich ist es 'sich etwas einbilden'. Diese Werben mit 'sich' sind nicht so einfach

Hat schon jeder einen (Christbaum) zu Hause? Wir haben unseren heute gekauft – ich finde ihn sehr schön. Er hat sehr viele Äste, das Dekorieren wird heuer sicher lustig!


Has everyone already a at home? We bought ours today – I think it’s very pretty. It has a lot of branches, decorating the tree will be a lot of fun this year!




P.S.: Please note: it’s “Verb” instead of “Werb” (English: verb). And: “heuer” is a very common Austrian expression for “in diesem Jahr”.

How should I have said that? I had the most trouble with figuring out how to say something resembling 'but I thought wrongly' and couldn't manage it, hence my lame attempt above. I also think the entire second sentence may be constructed wrongly. Oh well.

Both sentences were fine: no grammar mistakes, no vocabulary mistakes!

In your version there is a stress on “am Donnerstag” – which is okay in this context. If you don’t want to stress “am Donnerstag” it would be: …dass wir den Baum am Donnerstag dekorieren werden…
This sounds more natural… but as said before: in this context it’s absolutely fine to stress the fact that you didn’t decorate the tree on Thursday.

You could translate “but I thought wrongly” with “aber ich habe mich geirrt”.

Your German is ! Congratulations!!!



Sieht der Baum schön aus? Unserer steht immer noch „nackt“ im Freien und wartet darauf, dass wir ihn endlich hereintragen.
Ich habe noch immer keine Kekse gebacken!

Traditionsgemäß wird der Baum erst an Heiligabend aufgestellt und geschmückt, aber da wir direkt nach Weihnachten für ein paar Tage wegfahren, habe ich ihn ausnahmsweise schon eine Woche früher aufgestellt, damit wir etwas davon haben.


Traditionally, the tree is put up and decorated on Christmas Eve, but as we leave directly after christmas for a few days, I made an exception this year and put it up a week earlier so we can enjoy it.

Ein weiterer Unterschied zwischen deutschem Deutsch und österreichischem Deutsch der mir bisher nicht bewusst war! Vielleicht sollten wir noch jemanden aus der Schweiz dazuholen, damit das Chaos perfekt wird!
