Ce n'est pas bien grave, le Français est une langue réputée difficile, ça viendra à l'usage.

Don't worry about that, French is reputedly a difficult language, it will come with practise.


Pour ce qui est des "le" et des "la", c'est instinctif. Ou alors, j'y suis peut-être habitué : à force de voir tous les mots passer sous son nez mille fois par jour, on retient leur genre. Au bout d'un certain temps, ils ne sonnent pas bien si on ne met pas l'article correct devant un mot.

As for "le" and "la", that's instinct. Or perhaps I'm accustomed to it : when you see all the words a thousand times a day, you end up memorizing their genus. After some time, the words don't sound right if you don't put the proper article in front of a word.

Il faut toutefois se méfier : avec certains mots, c'est la forme correcte qui ne sonne pas bien ! Par exemple, on doit dire "un antipode", mais comme on est habitué à dire "les antipodes", personne ne sait si on doit mettre "le" ou "la".

Beware, though: with some words, it's the correct form which doesn't sound right! For instance, "antipode" is a masculine word but since everybody uses the plural form (which is the same for masculine and feminine words), no one knows whether to use "le" or "la".

Mieux encore, certains mots peuvent être utilisés indifféremment au masculin ou au féminin, et -le fin du fin- certains mots sont masculins au singulier et féminins au pluriel !

Better still, some words can be used indifferently in masculine or feminine form (e.g. après-midi: you can say both un après-midi or une après-midi) and -the pick of the pack- some words are masculine in the singular form and become feminine in the plural! (the words being: amour, orgue, délice BTW).


Ne t'inquiète pas pour cela. C'est de fait un sujet très difficile. Essaye de lire beaucoup en français, de regarder des films en français ou d'écouter des chanteurs français; tu finiras par t'habituer au genre des mots.

So don't worry about this. It *is* indeed a very tricky topic. Try to read much French, watch movies in French, listen to French singers; you'll get accustomed to the correct genus.

Oops, sorry about that!

"La fin"="the end" is feminine alright. But "fin" can also be an adjective, meaning "fine, well".

In the phrase "le fin du fin", the "fin" comes from the latter, and since you transform an adjective into a noun, you make it masculine (I think it's the custom - "Le jaune utilisé par Van Gogh dans ce tableau" - "The yellow colour used by Van Gogh in this painting", or instance. Or "Ce texte reste dans le vague" - "This text stays all fuzzy").

Anyway, it's a fixed expression, and sometimes they don't quite obey the same laws as everything else (otherwise it would be too easy ).

Does that have no accord, cos' the "me" is an indirect object, or it does accord, cos the "que" is a complementary direct object....

I seem to remember it should be "les journaux que vous m'avez demandés".

Well, I know I put an s on it, but whether I later scribbled it out in a fit of over-zealous correction....
