A Conversation for Protest Against BBC Policy Over Iraq

I agree the nickname idea is a good one. However, I would prefer it if people didn't start it with "anti-iraq". That's very judgemental (even if you happen to believe Iraq is more in the wrong than the USA) and I thought we were actually protesting about the BBC's policy decision. smiley - erm

I agree, SEF. I'd hate to end up hearing that there were lots of anti-Iraq people on h2g2!

I take offense at the remark about the . How am I responsible? I voted with the majority!

Find out how this happened and how it could be fixed http://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/polit/damy/prlib.htm

As for censorship, it only has the result drawing extra attention to a situation, and of making otherwise open discussions collusive, and the discussions continue regardless! So, with that in mind I call your attention to the fact that the real concern for the BBC is their own liability. What if someone used the board to plan some horrible event?

So, with that said I still agree that the BBC policy, like all censorship on speech, is bad policy. It may be a bit late now, but...

Just zis Guy, you know? † Cyclist [A690572] :: At the 51st centile of ursine intelligence

The thing that gets me is thi: if this decision were related to bandwidth, or bringing all the discussions together it would be defensible, but almost every item on the BBC News Talking Point section is now Iraq-based, so why is H2G2 being singled out?

Alex Watson [Zaphodista]

Well, I got a very polite reply from the BBC Editorial and Investiagation team, which said the purpose of it was a consolidate discussion into key areas (apparently Today, Asian Life, Radio Five Live, One Life and naturally The Greate Debate) so that specialist mod teams can check through the messages there, and help weed out rumour, mis-information and anything that might endanger lives, or something like that.

Additionally "While we recognise the desire of some users to discuss topics related to the current international situation, we also know that other users may not be interested in this subject. We therefore aim to provide areas of the site where users can carry on more general discussions without interruption."

HTH, have a nice diurnal anomaly.
