The simple solution is concrete, a fine material as used in Roman times

Absolutely, and it was also responsible for some of England's finest architecture:

The Tricorn a fine low maintenance building, they knew how to upset people in the sixties

And many people were, indeed, upset in the sixties. Fortunately, there were many who did not remember the decade in later years.

Well, they do say that if you can remember the 60s, then you weren't there?
However, I can, as I joined the R.N in 1969, but I enjoyed the 60s first

I can honestly say I don't remember the 60s. My first historically significant memories were of Richard Nixon interrupting "our regularly scheduled programming" to talk about either Viet Nam or Watergate, or of the Apollo XIV mission.

I graduated from high school in 1966, and college in 1970. I was busy preparing for adult life, and the preparation seems to have been successful, since I proceeded to work at a career for 37 years and retire with a reasonably good pension. Why would any of that be considered a waste?

The old sayings are not to be taken overly serious, paulh. I have fond memories of both the 60's and the 70's - although some are a bit hazy

One of my clearest memories was of the moon landings on TV. I enjoyed watching the antics of these strange visitors to that pock-marked world, especially the bits with the soup dragon.

I'm not that concerned with old sayings now that I'm an old sayer.
