Mala, I didn't mean translating was a menial job. I just meant that nowadays, when many employers demand a college degree for even menial jobs, it makes it difficult for otherwise talented and intelligent people who haven't gotten a college degree for whatever reason- and raising a family would lend all sorts of training and experience that school never could.

English is the first language of about half the population of the UK and not many of them are much good at it!
