MEMORY LANE!!!
Universal Granny Posted Oct 30, 2003
Have only just picked up this thread again, and, although I am a little late, can I just pay tribute to the old Austin A40s. I had a Devonshire, but there was also a Somerset and I believe a third one, but cannot remember which county it was. Or was it the Cambridge? as opposed to the Morris Oxford?
All those leather seats and walnut trim and semaphore indicators!
My Dad taught me how to change a spark plug, and a tyre and a fan belt before he would let me on the road with it. Said he didn't want to be coming out at all hours of the day for such "simple" jobs! I learnt other tricks with it as well, like carrying a small plank of wood with me so that when she wouldn't start I could lift the bonnet and whack the battery terminals with it. That sorted her!
Also remember juggling the "choke" to get her started, and the ignition was in two parts. You inserted the key and turned it, and then pulled a knob to start her.
Oh happy days
Take care Universal Granny

Hi Universal Granny, Thats right! cars were not quite so realible then as now Eh! Remember the old starting handles I cant imagine one of them stuck in the front of a new Ford Focus
Once when I was hand cranking my Dads old Armstrong Sidley, it spun me round with a back fire nearly broke my arm!

That is the way the tiny Carmen was too.

Smudger I thought my sister was dead too!
You do not get those kind of surprises every day!
I really wish they would sell T-shirts and stuff so we could recognize one another out and about
Pheloxi has license plates with something *h2g2 identifying*
I never wear a baseball caps but perhaps could be pursueded if it was or h2g2

hi everyone.
im sort of changing the subject a little bit as i thought you all might be interested in what i want to share with you.
ive been having a sort out and trying to get rid of some of my clutter. im a hoarder.
i came across my aunts old bed linen. well the top pieces. this is from the days just after the war, when everything had a war mark on it. a little label that looks like CC.
its a sagey type shade of green and its a silky/satiny sheet that used to go on top of the blankets and draped to the floor and then a matching eiderdown, which rested just on the top part of the bed.
i hope my description makes some sense to anyone
