hi everyone.

on to transport now, eh?

when i was a toddler, my dad had a motorbike and sidecar. dont ask me the make, im not into bikes. i remember mom, me and my brother inside the sidecar and my dad driving.
we then progressed to cars(1963ish).
the first being a hillman husky estate. it was green and yellow.
i cant remember all of our cars, but at one point we had a light blue triumph herald estate.
the final cars that both my mom and dad had, before they died were morris 1100's one beige and one blue.(1979/82)

despite having cars, we didnt do that much travelling. we still did a fair bit of walking or going by bus.
not like today where everyone just automatically aims for the car door as they leave the house.

i learnt to drive in a ford escort mark 3. a yellow onesmiley - smiley

smudger....we had a hillman minx...we very proudly took the three girls, and my mother out to the country for the day,and my youngest wanted to sit in the front with me when we stopped for a smiley - teafrom the flask!!!it wouldnt start again,so we had to ring for a garage to come out....bank holiday as well it was.......and very little money.......
just before they were due to arrive my hubby realised that when i lifted my daughter over from the back i had knocked the immobiliser switch with her foot!!!!my mother was none too pleased.....and neither was billy!!!
we also had a cortina,an escort,a corsair, and a viva,,,,,to name but a few.billys passion at the moment is the granada,..he loves his automatics!!!!

Isnt it funny how we use songs and cars (as well as other things)to recall certain events in our livessmiley - laughsmiley - ok
Like when you hear a song, you can remember where we were when it first came out, or other things, like who our partner was at that timesmiley - ok

I saw a Ford Cortina the other day, and it took my mind way back to 1975 when I had onesmiley - laughsmiley - coolsmiley - winkeye

Hi Smurfles, A shootinbreak? was the estate type car with wooden side panels, (imatation wooden sides) to simulate a the old western style covered wagons?smiley - ermsmiley - ok

The Morris 1000 had a similar type thing, they called it a "traveller"

Abbi, not sure about your Carmen Ghia? is it an American car?

I remember driving my Dads big Austin A70! Now there was a car! built like a tank, with a column gear change, and the dip switch was a button on the floor!smiley - oksmiley - coolsmiley - winkeye

The following were some comments made in the year 1957:

(1) "I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, its going to be impossible to buy a weeks groceries for $20.00."

(2) "Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long when $5,000 will only buy a used one."

(3) "If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous."

(4) "Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?"

(5) "If they raise the minimum wage to $1, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.."

(6) "When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage,"

(7) "Kids today are impossible. Those ducktail hair cuts make it
impossible to stay groomed.. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls,"

(8) "I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying damn in "Gone With The Wind", it seems every new movie has either Hell or damn in it."

(9) "I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas."

(10) "Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday that they will be making more than the President."

(11) "I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now."

(12) "It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet."

(13) "It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work."

(15) "I'm just afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business."

(16) "Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes.. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to Congress."

(17) "The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I
seriously doubt they will ever catch on."

(18) "There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend. It costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel."

(19) "No one can afford to be sick any more, $35.00 a day in the hospital is too rich for my blood."
