hi sal.

neighbours. dont talk to me about neighbours.smiley - blue
when i moved to telford 25 years ago, i had one good set of neighbours and we used to do things together. the neighbours at the other side were nosey, copycats, interfering been there done that know alls.. we eventually moved because of them.
my next set of neighbours were rather smelly. we moved next door to a chip shop. whcih was ok, till it went chinese. not that i have anything against the chinese or the food, but he changed the kitchen to suit chinses cookery, but flaunted the regulations with not using the right filters and chimneys for the food smells to escape.
i then moved to the house im in now. and iva had hardly anything to do with the woman who lives next door to me. she is a stuck up, im too good for this place type who makes you feel inferior. my son suffered her wrath and ive lived with the consequences ever since. for 5 years we never spoke, but she made my life hell as i was made to pay for my sons very minor transgression..
weve sort of kissed and made up, but we only say hello and goodbye. no other conversation.
i live in a little cul de sac with only 10 houses and i can honestly say i dont know any of the neighbours. ive said the odd 'hello' to a couple, but i keep my self to myself.
that way i cant get any more trouble from them.

the neighbours we had when i was a child were completely different.
this was from 1957 till 1978.
they used to be always in our house. my mom and mrs lillie used to go shopping together. my mom wouldnt ever call her by her christian name, but she used to call my mom hers..
this was in the days of several little shops, not supermarkets.
they used to take all of us kids to the park together. which with her 4 and my moms 2 and 4 foster kids used to be a right crowdsmiley - smiley.
we used to go to school together.
they used to help each other out.
take in each others washing if it rained.
helped out if someone was in hospital.

and that was just the neighbour next door(we had the end house of a row of 6). i lived in a cul de sac back then as well and everyone knew everyone elses business and everyone spoke to each other and helped when able.

i cant see my present day neighbour doing any of this for me.

thats what i mean helen,,,,when i was 5 we moved into a grocery shop,,,well,in the house attached to itsmiley - biggrin.my dad had only been given a short time to live, and my sister was 2and half.i can remember most of the people that lived down our street when we left, and everyone knew all about each other.the houses were back to backs, and i'll always remember how close to each other most of them were.most of them were friends as well as neighbours.i remember bonfire nights when everyone contributed, and sat out till really late.i moved into this house over thirty years ago,and the neighbour over our fence was my best friend until she died very suddenly 4 years ago.we did our shopping together, shared food when either of us didnt have enough when the children were small,we did our housework together,,,and our kids were brought up with each other !!!we even decorated each others houses together!!!!she was lovely, and now i dont see most of my neighbours from one week to the next.i bet theres lots of people remember those days....i wonder what happened to caring??????xxx

you want to be glad you didnt have the neibours i had when i was about 12,they where from pakistan or india,

and at night we heard the chickens,in there yard this went on for weeks,

and through the days the chickens would cry with fear,as they do,

it wasnt till one day the council came and told them they had to leave, that we found out they where butchering the chikens for a local
halal place the stench would have floored an ox,smiley - discojim

For those with noisy neighbours I have this advice:

Do not call the police, they have no power. Call the environmental heath dept at the council, who can do something. If they call the cops, the cops can then take action.

My neighbours are unfriendly and uncooperative, but no real hassle. It's just the way things are now I suppose.

I can remember when I used to get sent round the corner for a packet of frozen peas etc. I cannot see me doing the same with my daughter.

we were always being sent on little errands to the shops and we had to cross a busy dual carriageway.

my children never ever went and did errands for me and this was about 15 years ago and its got worse since.

they used to play out with other children in relative safety. now i wouldnt let them out of the front door.

My sister in law does though, which I cannot understand.
Her five year old is allowed to wander of to the swings, only accross the road I know, but not a concept I can comprehend.
Outside of school hours my daughter is within sight of my wife or myself, unless of course at a friends house.

we used to have a neighbour like that. she used to let her son play out without a thought to his safety.

we used to live on a housing estate that was circular in shape with a busy road running around the perimeter. so busy, that it now has those silly humps.

the thing that made it worse was the child was only about 2 or 3.

i was the one who had my children in the garden and everyone elses too. one year, we had one of those little blow up paddling pools and i found 7 kids in it and not one of them was mine. they didnt like it when i turfed them all out.

i think it is awful that people have to live in fear...i dont remember my mother ever once saying ..and dont talk to anyone, although i wasnt allowed to "playa great deal.yet we still had the same horrors that wefear for our children.myra hindley and ian brady were notorious around the time we were all growing up.my children werent alowed to go outside the gate, and my grandchildren have to saty in the garden when theyre here, and i try to watch them all the time theyre out.the roads terrify me......is it because were older and have more time to ponder the dangers than we had when ours were younger?????i am sure that as we get oldr we become more aware.

hi sal.
i dont think that its because we are getting older and have the time to worry about the dangers that children dont see.
our parents didnt worry about us as such, because the 'dangers' werent there.
we, as children used to walk for miles or take our bikes out with a few sandwiches and be out for the whole day. we would be out for hours at a time and still come home safely.
everything and everybody lived at a slower pace. traffic was slower and not so many cars on the roads.
now its one mad rush.

Hi Everyonesmiley - biggrin, Reading all those posts on the dangers of modern livivg for kids, just goes to show how bad things have got since our younger days. It seems society has changed altogether and our kids cant even play outside in safrety!

A sad reflection to the old days, when parents looked our for all kids and even helped each othersmiley - erm I look at our 4 Grandchildren and wonder? just what kind of world are they going to live in? better, maybe, worse, well is that possiblesmiley - ermsmiley - sadfacesmiley - winkeye
